DESCRIPTION:
During the spring of 2012, Staff solicited public input for the naming of the neighborhood park
that will be constructed in the Schaeffer Ranch development. The park site consists of 10.6
acres of park land, of which 6.3 acres are developable.
The park site is situated at a high point in the western hills with spectacular views of the Tri-
Valley to the east and the rolling hills of the ridgeline to the south. The site is bordered by
Dublin Boulevard to the south, Schaefer Heights Road to the west and Kelly Canyon Drive to
the north. The estimated completion date of park construction is June 2013.
Attachment 1 is the conceptual design for the park that was approved by the City Council on
October 3, 2006. The conceptual design includes the following amenities: open meadow,

basketball court, horseshoe pits, game tables, pathways, playgrounds, tennis court, covered
picnic area, and restroom building.
As has been the standard practice with the naming of the City's parks, the following criteria are
used for evaluating and selecting names:
• Neighborhood or geographical identification
• A prominent form of site topography
• An outstanding or unique feature of the site
• Historical or cultural significance of the area
• An individual or family that has provided significant, long -term contributions to the
advancement of Dublin and the quality of life, demonstrating service and commitment to
the community.
Staff conducted a call for suggested names on the City's website from March 30 to April 12,
2012. Suggestions were collected using Survey Monkey. Attachment 2 is a copy of the survey
results.
Parks and Community Services Commission Recommendation
On April 16, 2012, the Parks and Community Services Commission reviewed the park names
suggested by the public. On a vote of 6 -0 -0, the Commission unanimously voted to recommend
to the City Council the following three park names in order of preference:
1. Dublin Canyon Park
2. Schaefer Ranch Park
3. Dublin Highview Park
The Commission further recommended to the City Council the exclusion of "West Hills Park" as
a name for the park.
Although it was the second pick for the Commission, Staff recommends naming it Schaefer
Ranch Park as the name best describes the geographic location of the park for the public, as
well as recognizes the ranching history of the area.

14 The Hoare family owned and operated the ranch where this park and subdivision
is located during most of the 20th century. In fact, the land was the "Hoare
Ranch" for longer that it was "Schaeffer Ranch." Peter H. Hoare (1865 -1947)
was a major road construction contractor in northern California in the early 20th
century. He built his projects with mule teams. Locally, Hoare's company
worked on the Altamont Pass highway in 1912. In 1917 -18, Hoare's company
paved the state highway between Dublin and Santa Rita. This was the first time
that the highway that is now 1 -580 was paved between those points. The Hoare
family was among those who contributed land in 1913 when Dublin Canyon

The Schaefers have been stewards of west Dublin for around 50 years. The Apr 11, 2012 1:14 PM
property on which this park will sit was Otto Schaefer's cattle ranch and the
family, recognizing the formative role this land has played in generations of
Schaefers and their friends, has been eager to have as much space as possible
dedicated to open space. It would be fitting to honor all of them by naming the
park for the family's patriarch - Otto Schaefer, Sr., born Karlsruhe, Germany
1906, died Pleasanton, California 1982.
