The Swim Center is one of the City's most popular facilities with programs that reach all ages and abilities in the community. Interest in aquatic programs is hig~h and increases each year. For example, when the City first acquired the Swim Center in 1988 there were 13,573 customers for Recreational Swimming (average of 132per day). During the past summer, there were 23,645 customers for Recreational Swimming (average of 241 per day). This is a 74% increase in eleven years. Learn-to-Swim programs have seen a 78% increase since 1988 with 1,906 participants during the 1999 season. The Swim Team program has also increased from 38 in1988 to 128in 1999. Additional programs at the Swim FAcaprjcts\dscrenov\cc1221name. doc COPIES TO: ITEM NO. Center that reach out to the community include Aquatic Fitness programs, the 'Junior Aquatic Water Safety program and the Birthday Party pro~am. This past summer's annual Water Carnival enjoyed it's ninth year and featured (in addition to recreational swimming) two inflatable party jumps, a slip-n-slide, bubble art, face painting, tropical tattoos, a fishing game and sand art. The Hurricane Blues Band performed a variety of 60's-90's music. Even with the cooler than normal temperatures, there were 383 in attendance. In addition to being a popular recreational facility in the community, the Dublin Swim Center also provides employment opportunities to the community. In 1988, the Swim Center had a staff of 16 part-time employees; today the staff has increased to 36 part-time employees. To commemorate the renovation of the Dublin Swim Center and to reflect its. importance to the community, Mayor Houston has suggested that the City Council consider renaming the Swim Center. He has suggested the Peter W. Snyder Swim Center in recognition for Mr. Snyder's dedicated service to the City of Dublin.. Mr. Snyder is sometimes referred to as one of the founding fathers of Dublin and was on the original incorporation committee for the City. He also served as Dublin's first Mayor and was on the City Council for a total of 13 years. Renaming the Dublin Swim Center to the Peter W. Snyder Swim Center would involve either modification of the current sign or replacement of ihe sign with a new sign. The sign could be fabricated and "unveiled" in a renaming ceremony that could be in conjunction with the annual Water Carnival held in mid'July. Staff recommends that the City Council consider the suggestion of Mayor Houston to rename the Dublin Swim Center, the Peter W. Snyder Swim Center. -2-
