SUBJECT: Expanded Preschool Classes at Shannon Community Center and
Emerald Glen Activity Center
Report by Micki Cronin, Assistant Director of Parks and Community
Services and Frank Luna, Recreation Supervisor
ATTACHMENTS: None
RECOMMENDATION: Receive report
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: The City Manager's Work Plan includes an initiative to expand
Saturday programs by using the existing preschool classrooms at the Shannon Community Center and
the Emerald Glen Activity Center, which have typically been used only Monday through Friday for
preschool classes. The Parks and Community Services Strategic Plan includes several strategies that
promote and support positive youth development. These strategies encourage the implementation of
programs that are popular with the core customer market segment and are responsive to community
and industry trends, and position programs and service delivery to be unique, competitive and
responsive to customer needs and expectations.
To this end, Staff has created a new class on Saturdays at the Shannon Community Center and Emerald
Glen Activity Center for preschool aged children to assist in the achievement of this key initiative. The
class is titled "Soar!" The addition of a Saturday preschool class is meant to primarily serve dual-career
families and will provide an opportunity for children to experience a warm and caring environment,
where they will be able to express themselves, learn new skills and simply have fun. Staff has also added
a weekday morning story time program. The class is titled "Little Lovies" story time and will take place
on Wednesday mornings at the Shannon Community Center.
These new programs will be conducted by some of the same Preschool Instructors and Aides that work
in the weekday preschool classes. The following is an overview of the additions.

This class will be offered at the Shannon Community Center and the Emerald Glen Activity Center for
children three and four years old. The class will take place on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at

Participants in this program will improve their communication skills by participating in recreational
enrichment activities such as music, art, and physical fitness. There will also be an academic component
offered.
"LITTLE CONIES" STORY TIME
Registration for this class will be on a weekly basis. The class will be offered at the Shannon Community
Center for children 18 months to 4 years old. The class will take place on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m.
to 11:30 a.m. This was promoted to parents of children in the existing preschool classes and has been a
popular option. Fees for this program are $10.00 per class for residents and $12.00 for non-residents. In
this class, Staff will foster a warm and caring story-time environment where each child can listen to an
enchanting story, enjoy a small craft and simply have fun.
