Roll Call Committee Members (CM) Present: Diane Bonetti, Faye Guarienti, Eddie Jo Mack, Lee Sandeman, Diana Threlkeld Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison Present: Connie Mack Staff Present: Micki Cronin, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services; Anna Hudson, Recreation Coordinator; Diane Guenther, Office Assistant Oral Communications-None Public Comments-None Approval of the Minutes CM GUARIENTI MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE OCTOBER 4, 2012 MINUTES. THE MOTION WAS SECONDED BY CM BONETTI. THE SENIOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE APPROVED THE MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER MEETING BY A VOTE OF 4-0-1; WITH CM SANDEMAN ABSTAINING AS SHE WAS NOT IN ATTENDANCE AT THE OCTOBER MEETING. Written Communication—None Unfinished Business—None New Business THIRD ANNUAL CAR SHOW SUBCOMMITTEE REPORT The Car Show Subcommittee consisting of the Senior Advisory and Youth Advisory Committee Members met on Monday, December 3 to discuss ways to make the Car Show event intergenerational. They decided the intergenerational component of the event will be the Committees' Members working together at the event. Another suggestion was to have the information and registration booth located next to each other. One of the duties of the Committee Members would include a combination of staffing the information booth and the registration table on the day of the event. Other specific assignments will be determined at future meetings. Staff is looking at the possibility of expanding the Car Show by allowing some of the cars to be displayed on the park grounds. In addition, the Committee Members want to possibly add a children's area. Staff will meet with the Car Show Subcommittee monthly to discuss and review each individual's responsibilities at the Car Show Event. Other Business Staff announced CM Sandeman and CM Threlkeld's term as Dublin Senior Center Advisory Committee Members will officially end in December 2012. They were presented with Certificates of Appreciation in recognition of their service on the Dublin Senior Center Advisory Committee, and thanked for their service. Both CM Sandeman and CM Threlkeld stated that they would be available to attend the February Dublin Senior Center Advisory Committee meeting to welcome in the new Advisory Committee Members. Staff suggested the Advisory Committee meeting in January be cancelled. The Advisory Committee Members concurred with Staff's recommendation. The Senior Center Advisory Subcommittees provided an update on their perspective Strategic Goals and Objectives. Strategic Goal#1 —Reach out to senior groups and social networks in the community CM Mack reviewed the Welcome Packet and commented it is a very useful tool for the Greeters. Staff provided a review and training on how to utilize the Welcome Packet to the Volunteer Greeters and Office Assistants. CM Mack commented that one of the Pastors told her that a five minute presentation about the Senior Center was too long. Commissioner Mack stated another church said they would be willing to pass the information to the person in charge of their senior program. Staff commented that winter holiday season may be too busy for many congregations and recommended contacting the churches early next year. It was suggested that the Outreach Subcommittee consider taking a different approach and invite potential seniors to a specific event and tour the Senior Center. Staff will provide a list of events that would possibly draw newcomers to the Senior Center. Strategic Goal #2 — Assist Staff with planning and implementing new special events to attract new customers to the Senior Center CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF DECEMBER 6,2012 Page 3 of 3 Staff met with CM Threlkeld to discuss and plan an Explore Dublin Day Trip next fiscal year. CM Threlkeld suggested utilizing some of the ideas from the Dublin 101 bus tour offered by the City of Dublin. The Explore Dublin Day Trip would include dining at a local restaurant after touring Dublin. Strategic Goal#3—Educate residents about Dublin and resources available for older adults Commissioner Mack stated the Groves Apartments complex recently surveyed their residents to identify their interests. The top two were listed as "getting out more" and "computer training." Commissioner Mack plans to meet with the Groves manager to discuss the results of the survey and if the Grove's van could transport residents to the Dublin Senior Center regularly so the residents would be able to "get out more" as well as take the advantage of the computer classes offered at the Dublin Senior Center. CM Mack commented that she attended the Wheels training bus tour to Paragon Outlet and found the traveling training component of the tour to be very informative. She stated the Wheels representative, Jan Cornish, is very eager to teach seniors how to use the bus system. Staff reminded the Advisory Committee Members to record their volunteer hours monthly. Staff also announced that the City's Volunteer Recognition Event is scheduled in February 2013. CM Bonetti gave an update of the Senior Center Foundation meeting. The Holiday Boutique was very successful; 61 vendors participated and 23 vendors were on a waiting list. Commissioner Mack reported on the Parks and Community Services Commission Meeting. She gave a report on the summer quarterly report. The Commission also received an update on the holiday events schedule from Staff.
