The activities, classes, and events offered contribute towards strengthening the participants' physical, cognitive and mental wellness. This report summarizes the attendance during the winter quarter for the months of December 2012 through February 2013. The following is a comparison of attendance over the past five years. COPIES TO: G:\COMMISSIONERS&C0MMITTEES\SRADVCMTE\4-4-13 Item 7.1 Winterquarter rf fin ITEM NO.: 7.1 Summary of the Winter Attendance Comparison Although the volunteer hours increased by approximately 3% from last year, the Center's attendance decreased this quarter. It should be noted that in September 2012, the Activity Fee for drop-in classes increased by 25 cents from $1.25 to $1.50. Although the Dublin Senior Center drop-in activity fees remain the lowest compared to other senior centers in the Tri Valley, the fee increase may have affected participation levels. Staff is noticing a steady trend where new participants are starting to replace those who have chosen to decrease or discontinue participation. In comparing the winter quarter drop-in activity report from last year to this year, there was a drop in attendance of 695 participants. Last year the revenue was $8,696 from 4,907 participants and this year the revenue slightly increased to $8,889 from 4,212 participants. Due to lack of interest, the Foundation had to cancel one Casino trip this quarter which accounts for 50 fewer participants. Staff believes that seniors are more closely watching their discretionary spending due to the rising costs of items such as gasoline, food and rent. As a result, seniors are choosing to participate in fewer activities than before. Staff has noticed seniors being more selective in choosing which classes to participate in, thereby registering for fewer activities. December 2012 Highlights Fifty-five participants celebrated the season at the special Holiday Luncheon with delicious food, good friends and entertainment by the Zingers. The seniors also enjoyed a visit to the Presidio and the Disney Family Museum in San Francisco. The ballroom was filled with 128 dancers who enjoyed the big band music of Lady K and the Kings of Swing at the Holiday DancEscape. Thirteen participants learned how to make wreaths for the holidays with instructor Gale Gifford. The Senior Center received a $2,000 donation from senior supporter, Pat Hughes. January 2013 Highlights Fifty-five participants rang in the New Year at the January special luncheon and were serenaded by popular singer, Manuel Romero. A new Chinese Calligraphy class was taught by volunteer Stephanie Chow; eight participants learned to write. Chinese characters. February 2013 Highlights The February trip to Golden Gate Fields was sold out with 12 participants. The California Telephone Access Program offered a free hearing assessment and phone giveaway for eligible Californians. If deemed popular, this activity may be repeated quarterly. The Gentle Yoga class returned on Monday evenings with eight students. Fifty participants enjoyed a recorder performance by Valley Christian Church Fourth Graders during the President's Day Luncheon. 2 of 3 i Over 60 volunteers from the Dublin Senior Center were invited to the City's Annual Volunteer Dessert Banquet in February. Each volunteer contributed over 100 hours in 2012 for a total of 11,305 hours. Patron Testimonials Staff received two written commendations for the Senior Center during the winter quarter: "I learned about the Dublin Senior Center at the Civic Center. I like you have so many wonderful classes and people here are so friendly. The front door opens automatically and the staffs smiles to welcome all the seniors. I am pleased you have computer classes." DY Miao- Dublin "After commuting for many years, I enjoy going on the van trips. It's nice to sit back, relax and see the scenery which I wasn't able to do while I was driving."
