HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-11-2013 Approved P&CS Special Mtg Minutes PARKS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION SPECIAL MEETING Minutes CITY OF DUBLIN February 11, 2013 The February 11, 2013 Special Meeting of the Parks & Community Services Commission was called to order at 7:03 PM at the Dublin Civic Center, Dublin, California, by Chair Totaro. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Chair Totaro led the Pledge of Allegiance. ROLL CALL Commissioners (Cm.) Present: Boboc, T. Elias, Mack, Totaro, A. Elias Commissioner Absent: Ballesteros ORAL COMMUNICATIONS 3.1 BRIEF INFORMATIONAL ONLY REPORTS FROM SENIOR CENTER AND YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEES Senior Center Advisory Committee Senior Center Advisory Committee Member Diane Bonetti reported that two new Advisory Committee Members were appointed to the Advisory Committee. She further reported that the Advisory Committee continues to work on the Community Car Show scheduled for April 20, 2013 with the Youth Advisory Committee; and a vintage fashion show scheduled for May 18, 2013. Youth Advisory Committee—None APPROVAL OF MINUTES 4.1 January 14, 2013 On a motion by Vice Chair Mack, seconded by Cm. Boboc, and by a vote of 5-0-0 with Cm. Ballesteros absent,the Commission voted to approve the January 14, 2013 minutes as presented. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS 3.2 PUBLIC COMMENTS Mr. Steve Jones, past Parks and Community Services Commissioner, stated his appreciation and thanks for being on the Commission over the past years. He stated that it has been a great pleasure working with the Commission and Staff. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS—None PUBLIC HEARING—None UNFINISHED BUSINESS—None P&CSC Meeting Minutes—February 11, 2013—Page 2 of 3 NEW BUSINESS 8.1 Fall 2012 Quarterly Report Ms. Micki Cronin, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services, provided the specifics of the item as outlined in the Staff Report. Cm. Boboc asked if there were any other Hometown Heroes events planned during the year. Mr. Paul McCreary, Parks and Community Services Director, stated that the City offers only one Hometown Heroes event around Veteran's Day in November. Vice Chair Mack asked about increasing the number of vendors for the Holiday Boutique event at the Dublin Senior Center. Ms. Cronin stated that Staff is currently looking into options for expanding the event. Cm. A. Elias stated that overall, the registration numbers are great. Cm. T. Elias asked about the decrease in Preschool Program registrations. Ms. Cronin stated that in general, preschool registration is cyclical with the population growth and birth rates and occasional fluctuation in registrations is expected. Chair Totaro asked if the contracted sports programs with low attendance were at risk of being cancelled. Ms. Cronin stated that Staff continues to monitor these programs; however, activity cancellation can also depend on whether the program instructor accepts lower registration numbers. Chair Totaro commented that the growth in registrations looks similar to registration rates achieved prior to the recent economic downturn. Mr. McCreary stated that Staff has been pleased that registrations have continued to grow as the community grows. 8.2 The Live Healthy Dublin "10 Week Wellness Challenge" Ms. Micki Cronin, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services, provided the specifics of the item as outlined in the Staff Report. Cm. T. Elias stated that he would like to see the Wellness Committee of the Dublin High School Leadership Class offer a similar challenge for the students. Cm. A. Elias stated that this is a great event for the City. He asked about the rationale behind the event. Mr. McCreary, Parks and Community Services Director, stated that this event works toward fulfilling a City Council initiative to encourage health and wellness in the community. Cm. A. Elias suggested creating recipes that contain ingredients sold at the City's Farmers' Markets. Vice Chair Mack stated that she likes the event and plans to be on a team. Cm. Boboc stated that he thinks the challenge is a great idea and he plans to participate. Chair Totaro asked how Staff chose to partner with Live Healthy America for the event. Ms. Cronin stated that Staff recommended Live Healthy America for City Council approval because of the online features and interaction of the program. Participants can track their progress and receive weekly email motivators, which could in include recipes and exercise tips. Chair Totaro suggested sending an email to the Dublin Unified School District to generate additional interest in the event. P&CSC Meeting Minutes — February 19 '013 — Page 3 of 3 OTHER BUSINESS 9.1 BRIEF INFORMATION ONLY REPORTS FROM PARKS & COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSIONERS AND/OR STAFF Vice Chair Mack commended Staff for practicing effective fire drills at the Preschool Program. She stated that Staff not only shows the preschoolers what to do while at the Preschool, but also what they can do if an emergency occurs at home. Chair Totaro asked about the geese control efforts taking place at the Dublin Sports Grounds. Mr. McCreary stated that the efforts have been effective and the geese numbers are decreasing. Chair Totaro expressed his thanks to Staff for providing quick assistance with last minute field rental requests. Mr. McCreary and Ms. Cronin provided program and project updates.
