FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None i I I DESCRIPTION: The City's Youth Advisory Committee is comprised of middle and high school students that are appointed to annual terms by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council. The current term of the 2012-2013 Youth Advisory Committee will end on May 31, 2013. The general responsibilities of the Youth Advisory Committee as outlined in the Bylaws and Rules of Procedure are to: • Provide input on youth services and programming to the Parks and Community Services Commission, City Council and to City Staff. • Address issues that affect youth in the community. • Assist with the promotion and implementation of youth activities. • Generate an annual report on the progress of the Youth Advisory Committee. During the past year, the Youth Advisory Committee assisted in the coordination of the following teen events and programs: i • "splatter" - Youth Advisory Committee members assisted at the "splatter" event by operating "SPLAT-demonium," an activity in which participants wore a white painter suit and were j "splattered" with water based, non-toxic paint as they went through an obstacle course. a Participants were able to keep the event shirt and the painter suit with their own one-of-a-kind personal paint designs. It was a fun activity for all who participated. 1 • St. Patrick's Day Festival - The Youth Advisory Committee Members operated a booth that featured a "Spinning Wheel" in which festival attendees could spin the wheel for prizes. Youth Advisory Committee members also shared information about the Youth Advisory Committee and the Parks and Community Services Department. COPIES TO: ITEM NO: 3.1 GACOMMISSIONS&COMMITTEES\PARKS COMM ISSION\AGN DSTMT\2013\5-20-13 Item 3.1 YAC Annual Report.doc • Teen Job Fair — This is a coordinated collaborative event with the cities of San Ramon, Pleasanton, and Dublin in partnership with the Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club. This year's event was held at the City of San Ramon's Dougherty Station Community Center. The Youth Advisory Committee Members assisted with set-up and clean-up at the event. The City of Dublin will host the event in 2015. • Dublin Community Car Show — The Youth Advisory Committee and the Senior Center Advisory Committee Members collaborated on an intergenerational effort to assist with the Third Annual Dublin Community Car Show. Both sets of Committee Members worked together to set-up the event, manage the car registrations, and operate a craft booth. The Third Annual Community Car Show had an all-time high of 137 cars on display and more than 400 persons in attendance. i • Youth Mini-Grant program — New this year, the Youth Advisory Committee offered a grant program to support local youth and teen programs that serve Dublin youth. Five applications were received. The Youth Advisory Committee Members reviewed the applications and each club/organization made a presentation to the Youth Advisory Committee regarding the benefits of their grant proposal. In total, $1,200 was divided amongst the five groups. • Youth Benefit Concert — New this spring, the Youth Benefit Concert was held at the Shannon Community Center to showcase local youth with special musical talents. 1 These Youth Advisory Committee programs and events contributed over $3,200 to the City's Youth Fee Assistance Program this year, providing recreational opportunities for 16 youth in the community whose families have economic challenges. The Youth Advisory Committee Members will make a presentation to the Parks and Community Services a Commission on the various Youth Advisory Committee goals, activities and accomplishments during the 2012-2013 term. 1 RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Parks and Community Services i' Commission receive the report. 2 of 2
