Acceptance of Gifts to City from Bike Month Contributing Sponsors

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
This report details the contributions received from various local businesses and organizations
for Bike to Work Day Energizer and other Bike Month events and programming which took place
during the month of May.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
Only in-kind support was received.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council recognize the sponsors and formally accept the
contributions.

DESCRIPTION:
During May 2013 the Cities of Dublin and Pleasanton co-hosted a raffle to show support of
National Bike Month. Entry in the raffle was offered to participants in each of the City’s local
bikeways events surrounding the month of May which included: Semiannual Bikeways
Stakeholder Meeting (April 25); Adult Bike Safety Education Classes (April 28 and May 5);
Family Bike Workshop (May 4); Flat Tire Repair Clinic (May 5); Team Bike Challenge (month of
May); Bike to Work Day (May 9); Bike to the Market (May 16); Community Bike Ride (May 19);
Bike Donation Drive (May 25); Bike to School Week at Dublin Elementary Schools (May 1 – 24);
and Dublin High School’s Bike to School Day (May 24). Over 500 participants entered in the
raffle and 63 prizes were awarded. The drawing was held on June 1 and winners were notified.
The City of Dublin co-hosted two Energizer Stations during the 2013 Bike to Work Day event on
Thursday, May 9, at the East and West Dublin/Pleasanton BART stations. The City of Dublin

recorded over 550 bicyclists visiting the Energizer Stations while commuting to work. The
bicyclists received free refreshments, T-shirts, entry in the National Bike Month raffle, and tote
bags containing giveaways from regional and local contributing sponsors.
A total of 35 Tri-Valley businesses contributed to the Bike Month events, 23 of which are located
in Dublin. Approximately $2,600 in prizes was donated to the Bike Month raffle; additionally,
over $6,000 in supplies and refreshments was donated for use in other events throughout Bike
Month. A list of Dublin businesses sponsoring Bike to Work Day and the National Bike Month
raffle is shown below.

Staff would also like to offer special recognition to Dublin Cyclery, Livermore Cyclery, REI Dublin
and Valley Spokesmen Bicycle Touring Club. Dublin Cyclery was a collaborating organizer of
the East Dublin BART Bike to Work Day Energizer Station and co-hosted the event. Dublin
Cyclery also helped the City of Dublin co-host the Flat Tire Repair Clinic and Bike to Market
events. Livermore Cyclery worked with Alameda County Safe Routes to School to co-host a
Bike to School event at Dublin High School. REI Dublin was a collaborating organizer of the
West Dublin BART Bike to Work Day Energizer Station and co-hosted the event, in addition to
co-hosting the Bike Donation Drive. Members of Valley Spokesmen Bicycle Touring Club
helped to plan the Community Bike Ride and acted as ride leaders at the event.

Staff recommends that, per Government Code Section, 37354, the City Council formally accept
the contributions and recognize the sponsors by presenting them with certificates of
appreciation for supporting Bike to Work Day and National Bike Month.
