HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.2 Summer Camp Update 1` l AGENDA STATEMENT PARKS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION OLIFOR MEETING DATE: March 16, 2009 SUBJECT: Summer Camp Update Report by Paul McCreary, Assistant Director of Parks & Community Services ATTACHMENTS: 2009 Summer Camp Guide RECOMMENDATION: Receive report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: Staff has completed the planning for the 2009 summer camps that will be offered by the Department. In addition to continuing the camps that have been popular in the past, Staff is making some changes to those programs and adding new camps in response to customer input and evaluations. The Parks and Community Services Department publishes an annual Summer Camp Guide. This year the Camp Guide theme is "Rock Your Summer". The theme is meant to appeal to potential campers and plays off of the current popularity of the various virtual guitar video games. Therefore the cover of the Camp Guide (Attachment 1) features Glen the Guide playing air guitar. Elementary school and middle school aged students that have seen the cover have responded favorably saying it was "cool" and that it increased their interest in the camps. The Camp Guide will be distributed at the St. Patrick's Day Festival and to all students at public elementary and middle schools in Dublin. It will also be e-mailed to past participants, posted on the City website and at City facilities. Following is a summary of some of the changes and new camps planned for summer 2009. THE CAMP CONNECTOR The Parks and Community Services Strategic Plan identified the need to expand the number of full-day camp programs when school is not in session. Rather than creating several new full-day programs, Staff has created the "Camp Connector" which is a City provided service that "connects" children attending sports camps in the morning to Fun in the Sun or Swim Camps in the afternoon. There are 30 possible combinations this summer using the Camp Connector to provide a well-rounded, supervised, full day camp experience. Staff enables this connection by providing supervision and fun leader-led activities during the 12:00 — 1:00 pm lunch break. After the break, campers will be taken to their afternoon camps via supervised walks. COPIES TO: ITEM NO.: 8.2. GAPARKS COMMISSIOMAGNDSTMT12009\3-16 Summer Camp Update Item 8.2.doc SPORTS CAMPS Tennis will be provided by Arora Tennis. In addition to the lessons and cardio tennis fitness programs currently offered by Arora, summer tennis camps will be offered on the courts at Dublin High School and Emerald Glen Park. The Mighty Aces and Little Jacks camps cater to the beginner and intermediate level youth player. Challenger Soccer will be the only British Licensed Soccer group offering camps through the City this summer. These camps provide a unique social opportunity as children learn about other countries and the game of soccer from a European perspective. Families also have an opportunity to "host" a coach to further the cultural experience outside of camp. A Golden Goal extension option will be added this summer offering fun competitions and scrimmages in two extra daily hours of camp. For those registering 45 days prior to camp a soccer jersey is included at no additional cost. Based on the successful participation of nearly 600 players in the Junior Warriors Basketball League, a six-week Summer Junior Warriors Program will be offered on two nights per week in June & July. This program replaces the Pee Wee and Peanut Sports Camps, which are now offered as "Mini-Hawks" camps through the Skyhawks Sports Academy. The summer Junior Warriors program will be offered for 1St through 7th graders. This is a skill enhancing program and is different than a traditional league. Each week players will participate in a skills clinic on one night, and then in a scrimmage on a second night, emphasizing the on-court and game experience, rather than the traditional coaching and practice model. Kidz Love Soccer (KLS) is the City's year-round provider for recreational soccer classes ranging from Parent & Me classes up through age 12. KLS will be offered at both Emerald Glen Park and Shannon Park. Skyhawks sports camps offer a broad variety of contracted camps in multiple age groups ranging from an introduction to sports (Mini-hawk basketball, golf, t-ball, tennis and soccer) to sport specific camps (baseball, basketball, cheerleading and track & field). New to this summer will be two recreation- modeled camps where the emphasis is on games and activity rather than drills and instruction. The recreation camps will be offered in Flag Football and Soccer. The Summer Sports Academy is collaboration between local high school coaches and the City of Dublin to provide expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm in training youth of all abilities in our community. Held at Dublin High School, each coach will focus on their specialty, teaching the fundamentals in affordable weekly camps. Each camp also offers a great opportunity to get to know the local coaches. Baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse and soccer camps will be offered. All of the camps will be offered in the morning allowing participants the opportunity to take a swim camp at the adjacent Dublin Swim Center or Fun in the Sun camp at Kolb Park in the afternoon. RECREATIONAL CAMPS This summer the City will be offering the Glen the Guide Nature Day Camp. This is a new and exciting camp for children in 1St through 5th grades who seek a dynamic and fun summer camp experience at the Shannon Community Center. The camp will emphasize nature, biology, and ecology. Participants will benefit from interactive learning through hands on play, interpretive hikes, lectures and exploration of the East Bay Regional Park District's various parks such as Del Valle, Coyote Hills, Pleasanton Ridge, Sunol Regional Park, Lake Chabot, Ardenwood and more. This will be a full-day program with flexible participation options. Regular program hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. with an extended day care option starting at 8:00 A.M. and ending at 6:00 P.M. Staff with outdoor education experience and a Naturalist from the East Bay Regional Park District will supervise and instruct participants in this program. 2 of 3 Camp Emerald Glen is another full-day camp for elementary school aged youth that will be held at the Emerald Glen Activity Center. The popular Fun in the Sun program will continue this summer. It is a half-day camp held during the afternoon in local parks for children entering first through fifth grades. It is a drop-in program which allows participants to register for the entire summer or by week and participate in their preferred activities at a designated park. In the past Fun in the Sun has been offered at four parks including Dolan, Emerald Glen, Kolb, and Mape Memorial parks. This summer new locations are proposed for Fun in the Sun including Bray Commons and Shannon Park. The program will no longer be offered at Dolan and Mape Memorial parks. This is in response to customer demand and the goal from Department Strategic Plan to provide more neighborhood programs when possible. The new locations will also provide a better geographic balance of the sites throughout the community. Tenderfoot Day Camp is for children 3 to 5 years of age and was held at the Emerald Glen Activity Center for the past three years. This summer the program will be returning to the Shannon Community Center and will consist of six one week sessions. Each will revolve around a special theme that includes a daily craft, lots of play, stories, and water play. Total Rec Live (TRL) is a summer camp program geared toward middle school aged teens. It features sporting events, enrichment activities, and exciting excursions to local and non local venues. TRL is designed for teens entering sixth through ninth grades. The program consists of eight one-week sessions. The program will be based at Stager Community Gym at Valley High School. In addition to a weekly excursion, campers will also visit the Shannon Community Center for weekly cooking classes and the Dublin Swim Center for a water day. In addition to these City operated camps, there will be several recreational camps offered by independent contractors. Popular offerings include the Lego Pre-Engineering Camp,Driver's Education Camp, 4141 Skateboarding Camp, Camp Freeze at Dublin Iceland, Gymnastics and More Camp, Beginning Spanish, and Mad Science Camps including Machines & Robots, Flight Academy, World Scientists, Journey to Outer Space, Crazy Chemistry, and Secret Agent Camp. Additionally the Heritage and Cultural Arts Division is offering a variety of camps related to music, drama and art. Details can be found in the attached Summer Camp Guide.
