HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-16-2009 Approved PCSC Minutes PARKS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION Minutes CITY OF DUBLIN March 16, 2009 The March 16, 2009 Regular Meeting of the Parks & Community Services Commission was called to order at 7:01 p.m. at the Dublin Civic Center, Dublin, California, by Chair Jones. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Chair Jones led the Pledge of Allegiance. ROLL CALL Commissioners (Cm.) Present: Jones, Guarienti, Elias, Muetterties, Totaro, Van Loon Commissioners Absent: None ORAL COMMUNICATIONS 3.1 BRIEF INFORMATIONAL ONLY REPORTS FROM SENIOR CENTER AND YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEES Senior Center Advisory Committee Ms. Delilah Vanderpool reported that the Committee discussed options to provide a carpool program, the accomplishments the Committee would like to achieve during its term, and the four strategies that will help the Committee in achieving those accomplishments. She informed the Commission of the upcoming events being held at the Senior Center. Youth Advisory Committee Cm. Van Loon reported on the success of the Committee's booth at the St. Patrick's Day Festival. He reported that the Committee discussed ideas on how to increase participation for teen programs and events. 3.2 PUBLIC COMMENTS - None APPROVAL OF MINUTES —February 23, 2009 On a motion by Cm. Muetterties, seconded by Cm. Elias, and by a vote of 5-0-1, with Cm. Guarienti abstaining due to his absence at the February 23, 2009 meeting, the Commission voted to approve the minutes of February 23, 2009 as presented. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS None PUBLIC HEARING—None UNFINISHED BUSINESS - None a&CSC Meeting Minutes — March 16, 2009 Page 2 of 3 NEW BUSINESS 8.1 Update to the Senior Center Webpa2e Mr. Paul McCreary, Assistant Parks & Community Services Director, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in the Staff Report. Cm. Elias stated that he likes the concept of the website. He suggested that the font size be large enough so that the web pages could be easily viewed. He asked if the survey questions would provide instant results, and Mr. McCreary said yes. Cm. Elias asked about the user's ability to sign up for Senior Center activities and events on the website. Mr. McCreary explained that Staff has planned to link the class event titles to www.DublinRecGuide.com and to have a quick link on the homepage that also points to www.DublinRecGuidc.coni. Cm. Totaro asked if a survey has been done at the Senior Center that shows how many people utilize the internet. Mr. McCreary stated that the Parks and Community Services Needs Assessment Survey conducted last year shows that the internet was the third most-used form of information on the City's programs and activities. Vice Chair Guarienti commented that the internet and email distribution lists are good ways to communicate programs and events to the public. He asked if a unique logo would be created for the Senior Center. Mr. McCreary stated that Staff is planning to design a logo of the Senior Center's website name. 8.2 Summer Camp Update Mr. Paul McCreary, Assistant Parks & Community Services Director, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in the Staff Report. Cm. Totaro asked about including a Futsol program with this year's summer programs. Mr. McCreary stated that the planning for this year's summer programs has come to a close; however, Staff would look into including a Futsol program for next summer. Cm. Elias stated that he is very pleased with the Summer Camps 2009 Guide. He stated that the activities offered are the best that the City has ever offered. Vice Chair Guarienti congratulated Staff on a fantastic Summer Camps 2009 Guide. Cm. Van Loon stated that he likes the addition of the Camp Connector program. Cm. Muetterties asked about the intended age group for the Camp Connector program. Mr. McCreary stated that the Camp Connector program is geared towards first through fifth grades. Cm. Muetterties asked if the Camp Emerald Glen Day Camp would have excursions. Mr. McCreary stated that the Camp includes a weekly excursion or a special event. Cm. Muetterties asked if the Camp incorporated swimming activities, and Mr. McCreary said yes. Chair Jones stated that the Summer Camps 2009 Guide is by far the best. He stated that he is very pleased with the addition of the Summer Sports Academy. P&CSC Meeting Minutes March 16, 2009 Page 3 of 3 Cm. Totaro asked if the Summer Sports Academy could be promoted at the schools by the coaches in the program. Mr. McCreary explained that the coaches could accompany Staff, who on a monthly basis, goes to the middle and high school campuses to promote the City's programs and events. OTHER BUSINESS 9.1 BRIEF INFORMATION ONLY REPORTS FROM PARKS & COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSIONERS AND/OR STAFF Cm. Totaro suggested that because interest in lacrosse is growing, the City should consider incorporating lacrosse fields within the soccer fields. He stated that it might be a good way to generate income. Cm. Elias stated that the Dublin Ranch Golf Course has recently reduced its green fees to encourage sales. He hopes that the upcoming City's Annual Golf Tournament reflects the discounted pricing. Vice Chair Guarienti reported that he attended the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival, the Venice- themed lunch at the Senior Center, the City's Volunteer Recognition Dinner, and the California Park and Recreation Society(CPRS) Conference. Cm. Muetterties reported that she attended the CPRS Conference and the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival. Chair Jones reported that he was unable to attend the CPRS Conference due to his work schedule. He stated that he attended the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival. Ms. Diane Lowart, Parks and Community Services Director, provide updates on the Fallon Sports Park project. She stated that the City Council would be conducting the Goals and Objectives Study Session and Budget Workshop on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at 6:00 p.m. She informed that the City has decided to create email addresses for each Commission so that the Commissions could be easily contacted by the community.
