DESCRIPTION: The City will be sponsoring Dublin's 14th Annual Summer Concert
Series beginning in July 2010. Five concerts will be held on consecutive Friday evenings from 7:00 to
9:00 p.m. outdoors at the Dublin Civic Center Plaza area, and are free to the public. Traditionally, the
concerts begin on the first Friday following the July 4th Holiday, which means the concerts will be
scheduled to begin on Friday, July 9th, and continue through August 6th.
Staff is interested in considering the selection of artists for the 2010 summer series and would like some
direction from the Commission on the various types of music that would be preferred. The summer series
traditionally features a variety of musical styles including; Rhythm & Blues, Cajun/Zydeco, Reggae,
Motown, Rock & Roll, Country Western, Swing/Big Band and popular music from the past four decades.
Besides the general categories listed above, some other types of musical genera to consider are; Modern
Rock, Top 40, Rock & Blues, Folk, Dixieland Jazz, Hawaiian, Afro-Cuban and Tribute Bands. Many
times, bands play a combination of two or three different styles of music to provide a greater variety of
sounds that appeal to a larger audience.
This past year, the Commission requested Staff to conduct a short survey for concert attendees. The
surveys were conducted during each concert and 61 surveys were turned in to Staff. Three questions were
asked on the survey with the results as follows:
1. How did you hear about the Concert Series?
• 35%was word of mouth
• 25 %was from the City website
• 15%was from the Activity Guide
• 15%was from a publication(press release, ad in magazine)
• 10%was from a postcard

For the Commission's review, Staff has compiled a list of bands that have performed at the summer

Last summer, the Commission suggested a mix of music styles similar to the past few years with genera
such as Reggae, Cajun, Big Band, R&B, Rock & Roll, Country and Hawaiian. The Commission also was
in favor of bringing back Tom Rigney & Flambeau due to their popularity. Taking into consideration the
Commission's input, the following bands were contracted to provide entertainment for the Summer 2009
Concert Series:
• The Groove Kings (attendance 225)—R&B/Rock & Roll
2 of 3
• Threshold(attendance 300)—Classic Rock/Blues
• Tom Rigney & Flambeau (attendance 350)—Cajun/Zydeco
• Fred McCarty (attendance 250)—Country
• Lava(attendance 275)—Latin Rock
Based on the Commission's input on styles of music desired, Staff will attempt to contract with individual
music groups for the summer series, taking into consideration availability and budget limitations. Staff
will also consider summer concert offerings in surrounding cities such as San Ramon, Pleasanton, and
Danville, in order to avoid duplicate bookings of the same bands.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission
receive the report and provide input to Staff.
