HomeMy WebLinkAbout4 DRAFT Minutes 11-28-2007 CITY OF D UBLIN _YOUTHAD VISOR Y COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES OF.NOVEMBER 28, 2007 CALL TO ORDER The November 28, 2007 meeting of the Youth Advisory Committee was called to order at 7:03 PM at the Dublin Public Library Program Room, by Chairperson Morgan King, Jr. PLEDGE OFALLEGIANCE Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chairperson M. King. ROLL CALL Committee Members (CM) Present: Isabella Europa, Kevin Jung, Morgan King Jr., Justin Minor, Alex Rogers, Emily Edlund, Aslan Brown, Cammhung Tran, Taylor King Committee Members Absent: Matt Pecota, Jenny Lutz, Mike Pecota, Jessica Rose, Bre'Auna Pontiflet, Adam Brissey Liaison Absent: Gabriella Lorenzo, Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison Representative Staff Present: Frank Luna, Angela Gamez ORAL COMMUNICATIONS—None MINUTES OF TIIE REGULAR MEETING- October 24, 2007 ON A MOTION BY CM MINOR SECONDED BY CM EUROPA AND BY UNANIMOUS VOTE, THE COMMITTEE VOTED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF OCTOBER 24, 2007. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS-None UNFINISHED BUSINESS-None NEW B USINESS Youth Advisory Committee Goals and Objectives for 2007-2008 YAC Members were asked to identify goals and objectives for the 2007-2008 year. Several projects and ideas were presented. CM Minor suggested an overnight Lock-In to fundraise for a local food bank, which would require an entrance fee of either $5.00 or cans of food. This would involve board games, video game tournaments, and sport events. The money and the food would be donated to the Alameda County Food Bank. CM M. King suggested a decorative art project that could be put together by youth in the community and sent to the Dublin sister city in Ireland. Committee Members Brown and Europa brought up ideas for the March St. Patrick's Day Festival in which the Youth Advisory Committee would have a booth to either play mini basketball or take pictures with Glen the Guide for $I.00. The money generated from the booth would be used to donate to an organization, such as St. Jude's Hospital. CM Tran suggested planning a special event at an elementary school. Staff Member Gamez suggested that Committee Members could plan a field day for kids at the various elementary schools. The field day would include various organized activities and games. YAC members would coordinate the activities with staff from the After School Recreation program. YAC members voted on these suggestions and eventually decided on the overnight Lock-In, the Youth Advisory Committee booth at the St. Patrick's Day Festival in March, and the field day activities for children in elementary schools. The following are the Goals and Objectives established by the Youth Advisory Committee for the 2007-2008 year. GOAL 1 Coordinate a Teen Lock-In with proceeds going to the Alameda County Food Bank. Entry fee would be $5.00 and a canned food. Objective 1.1 Establish a sub committee. Objective 1.2 Sub committee provides staff with ideas on location, date, time, activities for-the event. Objective 1.3 Select date, time, location and program plan for the event. Objective 1.4 Implement event late February or early March 2008. GOAL 2 Establish YAC booth at the St. Patrick's Day Festival. Any proceeds collected will be donated to Alameda County Social Services. Specific designation will be determined. Objective 2.1 Establish a sub committee. Objective 2.2 Sub committee will provide staff with a program plan for booth activities. Objective 2.3 Booth activities to take place March 15 and 16, 2008. GOAL 3 Plan a field day special event for elementary school students in collaboration with After School Recreation Staff. Objective 3.1 Establish a field day event sub committee Objective 3.2 Provide program plan to staff. Objective 3.3 Event to take place late April or early May 2008. St. Patrick's Day Festival Staff solicited volunteers from the Youth Advisory Committee to assist with setting up booths on Friday, March 14`x' from 5:OOPM to 9:00 PM and the Fun Run event on Sunday, March 16` from 6:00 AM to IO:00AM. Festival dates are March 15t" and March 16"' from 10:00AM to 5:OOAM each day. Committee Members Minor, M. King, Europa, Jung, Mike and Matt Pecota had an interest in volunteering at the Festival. Summer 2007 Teen Quarterly Report Supervisor Luna presented the Committee with the Summer 2007 Teen Quarterly Report, which included participation totals for Total Rec Live and the Junior Leader Program. Supervisor Luna also added that the Dublin teen website gets a monthly statistics report for the website on the number of visitors, hits, and page requests. From June through August, there were 3,784 visitors to the website. Committee Members requested that the website be updated frequently to ensure its success and popularity. OTHER B USINESS Staff Member Gamez reminded the Committee Members about the Dublin Tree Lighting Ceremony to be held November 29`x'. Committee Members T. King, M. King, Minor, Europa, and Tran had an interest in volunteering. Volunteers will be meeting Gamez in the lobby of the Civic Center at 6:30 PM. YAC members were asked to wear their Youth Advisory Committee shirts at the event.
