During the fall 2007 quarter, the Department offered Teen Events, Student Union program and a teen website. Following is a summary of the Teen Events, Student Union program and teen website. Teen Events The City implements a variety of teen events to offer teens in the community a specific activity just for their age group. Two events were offered: Capture the Cauldron, and Teen Skate Competition at the Day on the Glen Festival. 52 skaters registered with over 100 spectators. These events gave the opportunity for youth to engage in a positive and safe environment while enjoying the company of friends. The skate competition at the Day on the Glen Festival, encourage teens to engage in a physical and creative activity. Following is a summary of participation in Teen Events. Student Unions Student Union is an after school recreation program designed specifically for middle school students. An emphasis is placed on academic enrichment and recreation/leisure experiences. Student Union programs are held in two eighteen-week sessions at Wells Middle School and Fallon School. The program offers a variety of fun activities for teens, including educational programs, sporting events, arts and crafts, science projects and music events. The program also features the popular homework club, and two exciting excursions throughout the school year. The program is held on Monday from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM and Tuesday through Friday from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM. Students participate in Homework Club each day of the week. In addition, Mondays feature Monday Madness; Tuesdays feature Music Appreciation where students can express their creativity through activities such dancing, listening to music, and karaoke; Wednesdays feature Sports Day such as basketball, soccer, football, kickball and whiffle ball; Thursdays feature Art Appreciation where students may paint, draw, or make lanyards or other arts and crafts projects; Fridays feature Old School Games where students can participate in a variety of games such as dodgeball, stickball, twister or listen to music from the 80's & 90's. All activities are subject to change. The following table summarizes program registration. Daily Attendance 32 31 Full-Session 49 41 20-Day Pass 58 49 Teen Website September 2007 to November 2007 the teen website report provides monthly statistics for the website on the number of sessions (visitors), pages requested, and hits to the site. The number of visitors the website had during the months of September through November was 1,894. The number of hits was 31,665. The number of hits is calculated by every time the user clicks their mouse when using the website. The pages requested is the popularity of the pages visited on the site. 4,712 pages were visited on the site during this time period. Staff has promoted and marketed the teen website at different locations throughout the community that teens frequently visit. The locations included Dublin High School, Wells and Fallon middle schools, and Dublin Library. Also, Staff has promoted the website at teen special events such as Capture the Caldron and Capture the Creature events. Staff has promoted the website at Dublin High during lunchtime hours and staff has included information regarding the website on the newly created teen newsletter "What's the 41 1?" Which was distributed to middle and high school students and sent to teens who have participated in City sponsored teen programs. Staff continues to work collaboratively with the Dublin High Journalism class which produces the school newspaper- "The Dublin Shield". The Dublin Shield is included on the website, and is updated on a weekly basis. DubTownTeens.com is the only website where students can view the school newspaper online. 2 of 3 The site has a survey feature located on the cool page. Staff has the ability to change the survey question at anytime. This will include questions ranging from what is the most popular holiday gift to what is your favorite MTV reality show. Staff will work with the Youth Advisory Committee Members and Teen Website Subcommittee Members and continue to market the website at the middle schools and high school at lunchtime on a monthly basis. Also, staff will ensure that the teen website continues to be updated with new games and features so teens will get excited about visiting www.Dub'fownTeens.com RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Youth Advisory Committee receive the report. 3 of 3
