HomeMy WebLinkAbout7.1 New Teen Sports-Related Events OF D 19( 82 AGENDA STATEMENT YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITEE MEETING DATE: OCTOBER 24, 2007 SUBJECT: New Teen Sports-Related Events Report Prepared by Rich Jochner, Recreation Supervisor ATTACHMENTS: None RECOMMENDATION: Receive report and provide input on proposed events FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: In January 2007, the Youth Advisory Committee recommended a goal of expanding sports-related events for youth and teens. The City Council incorporated this goal into the Fiscal Year 2007 — 2008 budget and created a higher service level for this type of programming. Planning is now underway to conduct four sports-related events for teens. The four proposed events are a kickball tournament, flag football tournament, golf tournament and an "Amazing Race". The purpose of these events is to provide teens with an opportunity to compete against peers in sports- related activities, while promoting socialization and the benefits of fitness. The first scheduled event is a coed kickball tournament scheduled for November 24, 2007. In this event, teams will compete against each other on Wells Middle School Field. Stager Gym will be used in the event of inclement weather. Individual skill competitions will also be available during the event. Awards will be provided to the winning team. In addition to the competition, refreshments will be available to the participants. The second scheduled event is a coed flag football tournament scheduled for spring 2008. Similarly to the kickball event, teams will compete against each other in a park setting. Individual skill competitions, awards, and refreshments will also be components of the event. The third event, tentatively scheduled for June 2008, is an inter-generational golf tournament including teens. This event will be held at a local golf course. The details of this event will be presented to the Committee at a later date. The fourth scheduled event, scheduled for summer 2008, is a challenge in the genre of the reality show, "The Amazing Race". In this challenge, small teams of as little as two to four participants will work together to complete challenges in the shortest time possible. Challenges will be both mental and COPIES TO: ITEM NO.: 7.1 G:\YAC\07\08AG GNDAS"I'MNT\7.1 physical, and fitness will be integrated as teams move between challenge stations throughout town. This event will take place in a park setting incorporating the surrounding area and some vendors. Awards will be provided to the winning team. In addition to the competition, refreshments will be available to the participants. Advertising for these events will consist of mailing to prior teen activity participants, web info posted on the City and Teen web sites, flyers at posted at local businesses, schools and City venues, flyers distributed at schools, and an e-mail blast to prospective teen participants. Staff asks that the Committee help recruit participants and help with the onsite set up for these activities. The City will be encouraging teens to embrace these events for the purpose of getting-together,-having some fin and making memories. These teen sports-related activities will be designed to promote physical, emotional, mental, and social development and growth. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Youth Advisory Committee receive the report and provide input on the event components. 2 of 2
