. !:%:. , DESCRIPTION: The 2000 Save Money and the Environment Too Campaign is a Bay
Area waste prevention media campaign. The campaign is now in its fifth year and was previously kno,am
as "Shop Smart: Save Resources and Prevent Waste Campaign." The campaign is a unique award-
winning partnership which brings together local government and private industry to educate consumers on
the importance of waste prevention - stopping the generation of waste before it happens, and reuse -
reduction and reuse before recycling. It highlights some of the simple and money saving shopping habits
consumers could practice to help reduce and rense the waste stream.
The focusof this year's campaign will be the same as last year. · Buy reusable and long-tasting products.
· Buy .the largest size you can use.
The 1999 media campaign resulted in 29 million exposures to either a TV or radio ad. Four participating
Foecry stores printed the campaign message on millions of paper bags and increased .their outreach with
additional features such as employee education, ads on Safeway milk cartons, an ad in :the Gala Foods
coupon book, and bag stuffers in English and Spanish at Nob Hill markets. Campaign banners, which
hung :at the mostheavily traveled BART stations, 'were seen by more than 167,000 riders each day.
Campaign coordinators are seeking 'finanCial contributions from dries throu~jaout the Bay Area. The
.Alameda County Waste Management Authority has been involved with the campaign for several years

and has supported it financially. Neighboring cities such as Pleasanton and San Ramon have also herald'~'
fund the program. The City of Dublin has not participated in the past, however Staff recognizes the
importance of showing the City' s support for these waste reduction goals and of joining this Bay Area-
wide effort. The City's support of this program will reinforce its commitment to AB 939 and the :
requirement to achieve at least a 50% diversion rate by the year 2000. ~""!'.
In 1999, contributions ran from $100 to $35,000. A $500 contribution has been requested because it is
consistent with other similarly sized city contributions.
It is Staffs recommendation that the City Council approve the budget change and authorize the
appropriation of $500 from the Measure D Recycling Fund to support the Save Money and the
Environment Too Campaign.
