Roll Call Committee Members (CM) Present, Faye Guarienti, Holly Ito, Ramona Krausnick, Eddie 10 Mack Absent: Diane Bonetti Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison: Connie Mack Staff Present: Rich Jochner Recreation Supervisor; Anna Hudson, Recreation Coordinator; Diane Guenther, Office Assistant Oral Communications-None Public Comments-None Approval of the Minutes CM GUARIENTI MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE OCTOBER 3, 2013 MINUTES. THE MOTION WAS SECONDED BY CM ITO. THE SENIOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE APPROVED THE MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER MEETING BY A VOTE OF 3-0-1 WITH CM BONETTI ABSENT AND CM KRAUSNICK ABSTAINING AS SHE WAS NOT PRESENT AT THE OCTOBER MEETING. Written Communication—None Unfinished Business-None New Business 7.1 2013 SENIOR INFO FAIR EVALUATION Staff reviewed the highlights as outlined in the Staff Report. Fifty private organizations and government agencies were represented, including three companies that sponsored the event for $500 each. Many free services were available including chair massages, blood pressure checks, balance testing, and bone density scans.The estimated attendance was 425 seniors and family members from the Tri-Valley area. COPIES TO: WCOMMISSIONS&COMMITTEES\SRADVCMTE\Minutes\2013\SCAC 110713.doc CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 7,2013 Page 2 of 4 Approximately 100 evaluations were submitted which provided Staff with measurable information such as 69% of previous visitors planned to return to the Senior Center, and 20 participants indicated this was their first visit to the Senior Center. The evaluation also provided Staff with data on how participants learned about the event. CM Guarienti felt the services offered at the Info Fair were valuable to seniors and reminded them to look at different aspects of their health and prompt them to follow up with a doctor. CM Mack asked how many flu shots were given this year. Staff stated 16 flu shots were given by Walgreens of San Leandro which was an increase from 11 given last year. CM Ito asked about the lunch that was provided during the Info Fair. Staff stated that BJ's Restaurant provided 200 bag lunches to the participants and utilized their employees to set up, serve and clean up before and after lunch. Staff stated there was enough food to serve all participants. Staff commented that the vendors indicated they were very satisfied with the event; many of the vendors were returnees. 7.2 2013 HOMETOWN HEROES OVERVIEW Approximately 150 people attended the 6th Annual Hometown Heroes event on Saturday, November 2, 2013. This free event was open to the public in celebration of Veterans Day. The program included the singing of the National Anthem, an invocation by Pastor David Kim from Pathways Church, welcome comments by Mayor Sbranti, and recognition of the veterans by branch of service by Garrison Commander Lt. Colonel Gerdes of Camp Parks. The Cooltones, a 40-piece band, performed an armed forces medley as well as musical favorites from the 1940s. BJ's Restaurant provided refreshments for the event. The Senior Center collected over 200 new white socks and an additional 200 items for the troops to benefit Operation SAM (Supporting All Military). CM Guarienti stated she really enjoyed the Veterans display in which over 80 veterans were honored. She felt it was a very nice way to recognize our service members. 7.3 SENIOR CENTER MARQUEE Staff stated the City is looking into installing an electronic marquee at the Senior Center on the Amador Valley Boulevard side of the building. Staff stated the marquee would be a useful marketing tool and could contribute to increased attendance at events and programs. CM Guarienti stated the marquee would be an excellent tool and asked if any thought would be given to the actual length of time messages are displayed on screen. CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 7,2013 Page 3 of 4 CM Krausnick asked about funding for the marquee and the anticipated project timeline. Staff indicated they are looking into funding sources and an anticipated project timeline has not yet been set. CM Mack asked about the cost of the marquee at Dublin High School. Staff stated the cost was approximately$50,000 at the time it was installed. CM Guarienti asked about the configuration of the marquee. Staff stated the cost of the marquee would factor into the type of marquee that could be purchased. Dublin Senior Foundation President Al Edge commented that he believed the Foundation would welcome the opportunity to help fund this project. Although he felt a marquee would be good for the Senior Center and the City, he suggested Staff consider purchasing a larger marquee than the one currently located at the Shannon Community Center. Staff stated the City's guidelines for outdoor signage would also need to be considered. Staff stated more information regarding this item would be presented at a future meeting. Other Business CM Guarienti asked about ideas brought up at the last meeting regarding the lunch program. Staff stated more information would be presented at the December meeting. Dublin Senior Foundation President Al Edge reported the Foundation is considering the possibility of providing lunch on the day(s) Spectrum Community Services does not offer lunch, especially during holidays when the Senior Center is open. This would not be implemented until spring 2014. Lunch would likely consist of a sandwich, chips and drink for a nominal fee. He reported that over 70 vendors are expected to participate in the upcoming Senior Center Holiday Boutique on Saturday, November 16. Commissioner Mack reported on the October Parks and Community Services Commission meeting. Faye Guarienti of the Senior Advisory Committee and a member of the Youth Advisory Committee each gave a report about their perspective Committees. She reported that the Iron Horse Trail acquisition closed escrow. She further reported that a developer donated $2,500 to the Youth Fee Assistance Program. CM Guarienti asked if the Advisory Committee Members plan to attend lunch at the Senior Center after their next Advisory Committee meeting on December 5 as previously discussed. It was recommend that the Advisory Committee meeting in December start one hour later, at 10:30 AM, so the Committee Members may attend lunch immediately following the meeting at 11:30 AM. Staff reported the Schaefer Ranch Park Grand Opening on November 2, 2013 was well attended. Also, the City is conducting a marketing and branding review where residents will be surveyed for their input. Adjournment—10:23 AM.
