Presentation of Monetary Award to Friends of the Dublin Library

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The Friends of the Dublin Library will receive a monetary award from StopWaste for the City’s
participation in the Dublin Energy Challenge.

RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council receive the report.

DESCRIPTION:
Over the past several months, the City and StopWaste have been coordinating an Energy
Challenge for the Dublin community to assist residents in lowering their PG&E bills. Specifically,
residents were asked to sign up to use the Home Energy Analyzer (HEA), which is a software
program that evaluates a resident’s utility bill and provides ideas for reducing home energy
consumption. The program uses PG&E smart meter data to evaluate energy usage. Residents
who signed up and activated their HEA account were provided with customized energy-saving
recommendations, including conservation behaviors and do-it-yourself improvements to help
them increase their home’s energy efficiency. The goal of the Challenge was to sign up as many
residents as possible to participate in the program. The enticement to encourage residents to
sign up was a reward for the Friends of the Dublin Library. Because of the community’s efforts,
the Friends of the Dublin Library are Challenge winners, and they will be receiving a check for
$500 from StopWaste, which will be used to promote Dublin Library programs.

The City of Dublin and StopWaste completed the Dublin Home Energy Challenge at the end of
January 2014. In total, 117 Dublin residents were signed up and utilizing the HEA software
program. Dublin was the sole community participating in a special challenge to promote the
program, which included a cash award provided by StopWaste. The Challenge was a big
success. Out of 15 cities participating, Dublin accounted for the largest number of signups at
23% of the total. Even though the challenge is over, all Alameda County residents are eligible
to sign up for the HEA through December 2014, which can be found at
http://homeenergyanalyzer.org/.
StopWaste will present a check for $500 to Friends of the Dublin Library.
