Foss, Acting City Manager SUBJECT: Proposed Volunteer Fair at the Dublin Farmers’ Market Prepared by Shari Jackman, Public Service Employee EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The City Council has directed Staff to explore an opportunity for non-profit organizations in the area to showcase and market their groups to residents who are willing to donate time and money to area causes. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Costs related to this event will be for Farmers’ Market “Carrot Cash” provided to potential volunteers, as well as produce bags provided by the City’s Environmental Services Division. Total costs are expected to be under $1,000 and are available in the Fiscal Year 2013-2014 Operating Budget.. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council, by motion, provide direction as to whether or not to proceed with the proposed event. Submitted By Reviewed By Community Development Director Acting Assistant City Manager DESCRIPTION: At the February 18, 2014, City Council meeting, the City Council directed Staff to explore an opportunity for non-profit organizations in the area to showcase and market their groups to residents via a Volunteer Fair. Staff proposes that a Volunteer Fair be scheduled on a date that coincides with existing programming in the City such as Dublin Pride Week, and would be at a time convenient for community members to participate. This would not only save Staff time and money, but promotion of the event could be tied in with the event’s built-in promotion. ITEM NO. 7.1 Page 1 of 2 Staff proposes that a Volunteer Fair be held at the Dublin Farmers’ Market on Thursday, May 1, 2014. This will be a “First Thursday” event, when the Market features music and wine tastings, and foot traffic is heavier than normal. Staff proposes to invite area non-profits that serve the Dublin community to bring a canopy and table, and an area would be set up along the promenade, just outside of the Market’s operating boundary, to comply with the terms and conditions of the Market’s operating agreement. In response to the City Council recommendation that some sort of benefit be provided to any resident who attends the Volunteer Fair, Staff proposes that passports be created, and if a visitor gets his or her passport stamped by a variety of organizations, they will receive a produce bag, courtesy of the City’s Environmental Services Division, plus $3 in “Carrot Cash” to spend at the Market.
