The City Council will present a proclamation for Arbor Day, April 25, 2014.

RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council present the proclamation.

DESCRIPTION:
The City Council will present a proclamation for Arbor Day 2014. Arbor Day is an annual
observance that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. It
was first observed in 1872 in Nebraska with the efforts of J. Sterling Morton, considered founder
of Arbor Day.

A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA
“Arbor Day – April 25, 2014”
WHEREAS
, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for
the planting of trees; and
WHEREAS
, the holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska;
and
WHEREAS
, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS
, trees can reduce the erosion of precious topsoil by wind and water, lower heating and cooling costs, moderate
the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS
, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other
wood products; and
WHEREAS
, trees in the City of Dublin increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and
beautify the community; and
WHEREAS
, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
that the Dublin City Council does hereby proclaim April 25, 2014, as Arbor Day in the
City of Dublin and urges all citizens to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED
that all citizens are urged to plant and care for trees to gladden the hearts and promote the
well-being of this and future generations.
