DESCRIPTION:
At the December 5th City Council Meeting, Mayor Houston requested that Staff draft a letter to
Congresswoman Tauscher asking for assistance in getting a new, larger post office in Dublin and a letter
to Alameda County suggesting that a portion of their designated government use property in eastern
Dublin be reserved as a future post office location.
This request was driven by the inadequacy of the current post office on Village Parkway to serve the
City' s residents. Residents are faced with long lines, inadequate parking and late deliveries, and Dublin's
current and projected growth will only compound the problem. Recognizing this problem, the City of
Dublin, the Dublin Chamber of Commerce and U.S. Representative Ellen Tauscher's Office have been
working to resolve the problems by requesting additional drivers and post office staff, as well as
requesting that a larger facility be constructed in eastern Dublin. The Dublin Postmaster is well aware of
the problems with the current post office and has requested that funding be made available in the
District's 5 year plan for a larger facility.

In order to expedite this process and discuss possible solutions to the current situation, a meeting has been
scheduled in February between the City of Dublin, Ellen Tauscher's Office, the Dublin Chamber of
Commerce and the U.S. Post Office. At the Mayor' s request, Staff has drafted a letter to the Alameda
County Board of Supervisors requesting that the County attend the meeting. The letter also expresses the
City' s interest in exploring the possibility of designating a portion of the County' s government use
property in eastern Dublin, between Gleason Drive and Broder Street, as a site for a future post office.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Council authorize Staff to send the attached letter with the Mayor' s signature to
the Alameda County Board of Supervisors inviting them to attend the February meeting and to consider
designating a portion of their government use property in eastern Dublin as a future post office site.

Honorable Board of Supervisors,
As you are well aware, the City of Dublin is experiencing unprecedented growth. This growth has
contributed to serious concems over the adequacy of Dublin' s existing Post Office. For years
residents have endured long lines, inadequate parking and late deliveries. Dublin's recent growth
has compounded the problem, with some residents now receiving mail deliveries as late as 9:00
p .m. Over the past several years, the City of Dublin, the Dublin Chamber of Commerce and
Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher's Office have communicated these concerns to the Post Office,
and inquired about the possibility of moving the Post Office to a larger facility in eastern Dublin.
The Postmaster for the Dublin Post Office has indicated that while he is aware of the need for a
larger facility, there is currently no available funding. The Postmaster has requested that this
proposal be considered by the District Office and be included in their 5 year plan, but to date no
funding has been secured. After researching all available options, the City believes that one of the
most viable Post Office locations is at the County' s designated government-use property in
eastern Dublin between Gleason Drive and Broder Street. The City is interested in exploring the
possibility of designating a portion of this site as a location for a future post office. It is the City's
hope that by identifying a site location, the funding and planning process can be expedited.
The Dublin Chamber of Commerce has scheduled a meeting in February 2001 to discuss the
available options for relocating and expanding the Dublin Post Office. Representatives from the
City of Dublin, the U.S Post Office and Congresswoman Tauscher's Office will be attending. The
City would like to extend a formal invitation to Alameda County to also participate in these
discussions. Your input and assistance is very much needed in this matter. Please contact the City
Manager, Richard Ambrose at 925-833-6650 as soon as possible to communicate the County's
interest in attending the February meeting. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can
provide in this matter.
Sincerely,
Guy S. Houston
