Dublin Senior Center Attendance Report—Spring 2014 RECOMMENDATION: Receive report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Parks and Community Services Department strives to develop and implement quality programs that strengthen community image, provide recreational experiences, encourage healthy lifestyles and preserve the City's heritage. This is accomplished by providing innovative recreational and social programs. Following is a summary of the programs and events held in the spring quarter. RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES Recreational activities provide positive recreational experiences and opportunities to enhance health, well-being, and create balance in life. The classes are taught by contracted instructors as well as commercial recreational providers in the area. The following is a summary of registration. The majority of the classes were taught in six to eight week sessions although some classes are offered as a one time workshop. There were 85 recreational classes offered during spring 2014. Popular children's classes included Robotics, Parent and Me Gymnastics, Pee Wee Playtime, Fitness, Self Defense COPIES TO: ITEM NO.: 8.2 G:\COMMISSIONS&COMMITTEES\PARKS COMM ISSION\AG N DSTMT\2014\7-21 Item 8.2 Spring Quarterly Report 2014.doc and Safety Awareness Training, Mini-Mites, and Game Design. Popular adult classes included Bombay Jam Total Body Fitness, Zumba, Pilates Barre Sculpting and Pilates Plus. Attachment 1 is a detailed registration report. PRESCHOOL There were a total of 226 registrations for Session III for the spring quarter; the three-year old classes had 105 registrations. There were 102 registrations for the four-year old classes, and junior kindergarten program had 19 registrations. Due to the Dublin Unified School district offering a "Transitional Kindergarten" class for youth ages four to five, Staff has seen a decrease in enrollment for the Junior Kindergarten program as well as the four- year old afternoon classes. At the Emerald Glen Activity Center the four-year old Monday/ Wednesday/Friday afternoon class was canceled due to low enrollment, but the Tuesday/Thursday classes were offered. At the Shannon Community Center the afternoon Monday/Wednesday/Friday and Tuesday/Thursday four-year old class were also canceled due to low enrollment. The program takes place on Mondays and Wednesday mornings. There were a total of 81 children registered for the spring session. Currently, there was a waitlist at Green and Kolb Elementary Schools for full session and 20 day pass participants; these waitlists were due to space limitations at the sites. There were 98 students registered for the spring session, which was a continuation of Session I for the school year that began during the fall quarter. Spring Break Camp "Fun in the Sun" "Fun in the Sun" spring break camp is a half-day camp that takes place at Emerald Glen Park from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Staff from the Family Services and the Sports program areas worked collaboratively to offer morning sports camps at Emerald Glen Park. Staff walked the participants of the morning camp to Spring Break Camp "Fun in the Sun" in the afternoon. The morning camp which is coordinated by Sports program Staff was a tennis camp at Emerald Glen Park. This provided an all-day experience for participants with a variety of activities for campers. There were 18 participants. Following is a summary of registration. The Teen Job fair was held at the City of Pleasanton Senior Center on March 1, 2014. The Teen Job Fair was coordinated collaboratively with the Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club, City of Pleasanton, City of San Ramon and the City of Dublin. The majority of the teens/students participating came from Tri-Valley high schools. There were 474 students registered for this event. The event will return to Dublin in 2015. The fourth annual "Dublin Community Car Show' took place on Saturday, May 3, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. at the Heritage Park and Museums. This community event was planned and coordinated by members from the City's Youth Advisory Committee and the Senior Center Advisory Committee. The event had 92 cars registered. Over 350 community members attended the event throughout the day. Community vendors and four food trucks provided refreshments and food. Proceeds from the event benefited Dublin's Youth Fee Assistance Program. The Youth Advisory Community offered a Benefit Concert with proceeds from the event going to the Dublin Youth Fee Assistance Program. The event was held on April 13 at the Shannon Community Center from 2:00 PM —5:00 PM. There were seven youth performers who performed various acts from pianists to vocalists. Over 35 persons attended the concert. There were 550 registered participants this year. Next year Staff plans to offer a second egg hunt in an effort to accommodate waitlists for this popular event. Spring Eggstravaganza Registration Summary 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 Resident 395 392 360 353 368 Non-Resident 155 155 139 141 127 Total Registration 550 547 499 494 495 SPECIAL EVENTS Shamrock SK Fun Run and Walk The City sponsored the 16th Annual Shamrock 5K Fun Run and Walk as part of the St. Patrick's Day activities. There were 2,400 registrants, which was a 5%decrease from the all-time high which occurred last year. This year participants had an opportunity to pick-up their race bib and t-shirt at local retailer World of Shoes the week prior to the event. Participants were also allowed to register for the event at the same location. This change significantly decreased the congestion of the pre-race area before the event. Marketing for the event included email communication to past participants and the distribution of the registration flyers to Dublin schools and local running clubs. The assembly area of the race was located near the California Custom Carpet parking lot on Dublin Boulevard across from the Civic Center. Upon completion of the race, runners were treated to refreshments including pizza, pastries, fruit, and water. A band provided post-race entertainment in the St. Patrick's Day Festival area at Civic Center. Shamrock 5K Fun Run and Walk Registration Summary :Admission Type 2014 2013--_ _ 2012 2011 2010 Pre-Registration 2,272 2,306 1,405 1,480 1,231 On Site-Registration 128 217 435 358 380 Total Registration 2,400 2,523 1,840 1,838 1,611 Live Healthy Dublin The City of Dublin Parks & Community Services Department invited the public to participate in a community-wide event to motivate, educate, and empower residents to achieve optimal health through a customized wellness challenge. The Live Healthy Dublin "Step 2 It Challenge" teamed up co-workers, family, and friends to get active, lose weight, eat better, and live a healthier lifestyle. The ten-week Challenge ran from March 16 through May 25, 2014. The program kicked-off at the Shamrock 5K Fun Run and Walk at the City's St. Patrick's Day Festival. Seventy-five teams registered for the Challenge, with 350 individuals participating on a 102 teams. Nearly 152 million total steps were recorded by participants, which equated to over 75 thousand miles. For the second year the City partnered with Kaiser Permanente as the primary sponsor. Other sponsors included The Fit Potato, Power Within Wellness —Jenifer Mann, Health Coach, Fallon Dental Group, BJ's Restaurant, and Arora Tennis and Fitness. Donations from these sponsors assisted the Department in augmenting the services provided to the community, by enhancing community events, maintaining affordable participation fees and providing give-a-ways. SPORTS Adult Basketball Leagues During the spring a total of 18 teams participated in three leagues (two Men's 5-on-5 "D" leagues and one Men's 5-on-5, 30+ league). The 5-on-5, "D" leagues began in May and will conclude in August. The Men's 5-on-5, 30+ league has a 30-year and older age requirement and began in March and concluded in June. Team registration for the spring leagues increased 38%over last year. For the first time, the Friday night league did not reach a minimum number of teams required to be held. Wednesday night proved to be the more popular night for Bocce this quarter. The games took place at the two bocce courts located at Emerald Glen Park. The bocce league began in April and concluded in July. One league was a Men's "D" league played on Tuesday evenings and the other was and a Coed "D" league played on Thursday evenings. The spring leagues were held at the Fallon Sports Park. The leagues began in April and concluded in June. The format was changed this year to a shorter eight game regular season (previously ten games).Team registration for the spring leagues increased 14%over last year. During the spring the City offered classes through Arora Tennis, California Player Development League, Core Volleyball, Dublin Ranch Golf Course, Kidz Love Soccer, Make Me a Pro and Wee Hoop. In addition, the City offered youth spring break week sports camps through independent contractors. A total of 954 persons registered for spring contracted sports programs, which was a 32% increase compared to the prior spring and a five- year high. The largest increase was due to expanded tennis programming. All youth basketball programs also showed considerable growth. Following is a summary of registration. Recreational Swimming began on May 3 and continued on weekends through Memorial Day weekend. Two sessions of the Learn-to-Swim classes were held in May and early June. Recreational Swimming The total attendance numbers during Recreational Swimming increased slightly. This increase can be attributed to a warmer spring season than last year. The Swim Center was open nine days during the spring quarter for Recreational Swimming. Daily Attendance 57 53 50 8 36 Spring Learn-To-Swim Program During the spring, 335 people participated in swim lessons, which was an increase of 10%from last year. Marketing efforts such as use of the Vertical Response email marketing system and the 2014 Aquatics Guide contributed to help increase attendance. The spring swim lesson program includes two three- week weekday sessions, one four-week Saturday session and two four-week Sunday sessions. The competitive stroke program includes two class options: Pre-season Conditioning and Advanced Swimming Techniques. There were 147 youth registered in the program, which was a 68% increase from last year. The increase in participation can be attributed to increased marketing efforts from the coaching staff to previous participants and the increase in popularity of the City of Dublin's competitive swimming program. In 2014, the JAWS program was combined with the City of Dublin's Junior Leader Program (JLP) to form the Dublin LEAD program. This new program allows Dublin youth the opportunity to learn about a variety of recreational programs. Those completing the program received certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (includes First Aid), CPR for Lifeguards, and Administering Emergency Oxygen. Four of the participants were subsequently hired by the City of Dublin as Lifeguards, which is one of the benefits of offering these courses. Along with learning basic instructional techniques, participants learn how to instruct children, adults and those with disabilities. The following is a summary of the 2014 spring quarter. A detailed attendance report can be found in Attachment 2. Total volunteer hours decreased by 9%. Staff attributes this to a few long-time key volunteers who moved away or reduced their hours due to a variety of personal reasons. Large growth was experienced in some classes including Balance and Agility, Chinese Mah Jong, Saturday Art Classes and Ukulele Jam Session. New programming this quarter included a Hawaiian Hula class. Special luncheons included a St. Patrick's Day theme in March with 81 attending and a Mother's Day theme in May with 60 attending. A crowd of 60 dancers attended the DancEscape in May. The annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, honoring 94 Dublin Senior Center volunteers was held in April. The theme this year was Volunteers Warm the Heart.
