Foss, City Manager " SUBJECT: 2014 Walk and Roll to School Week Proclamation Prepared by Kathy Southern, Environmental Services Technician EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: During the second week of October, the City of Dublin will work with the Dublin Unified School District and Safe Routes to Schools Alameda County to promote participation in International Walk to School Month, an annual event that encourages students and parents to consider walking and bicycling to school. This proclamation will declare the week of October 6 through October 10 as "Walk and Roll to School Week" in the City of Dublin. FINANCIAL IMPACT: The Fiscal Year 2014 -15 budget includes $3,183 to cover the costs of events and outreach related to Walk and Roll to School Week. The total Walk and Roll to School Week budget will be funded by Measure B Bicycle /Pedestrian Funds. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council Approve the Proclamation Declaring the Week of October 6 through October 10 as "Walk and Roll to School Week" in the City of Dublin ubmitte` By Public Works Director DESCRIPTION: '\ Reviewed By Assistant City Manager The Safe Routes to Schools program exists in more than 40 countries and in all 50 states. The program endeavors to increase the percentage of students and parents utilizing alternative methods of travel to and from school through the provision of resources, encouragement, and expertise. The City of Dublin has historically participated in the local Walk and Roll to School Week events with the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program as part of its annual International Walk to School Month event. Last year, nine Dublin schools participated in Walk and Roll to School Week including Dougherty Elementary, Green Elementary, Kolb Elementary, Murray Elementary, Dublin Page 1 of 2 ITEM NO. 3.2 Elementary, Frederiksen Elementary, Fallon Middle School, Wells Middle School, and Dublin High School. This year, it is anticipated that every school in the Dublin Unified School District (DUSD) will participate in Walk and Roll to School Week from October 6 through October 10. The City's program and Staff have certain resources available to assist with additional items such as distribution of safety information, giveaways, and raffle prizes for participating students. Staff is also coordinating a free Family Bicycling Workshop on Saturday, October 4 at Murray Elementary School. At this class, students and parents will be given the opportunity to practice their bicycling skills and receive safety tips prior to Walk and Roll to School Week. NOTICING REQUIREMENTS /PUBLIC OUTREACH: City staff will work with Dublin Unified School District to prepare and distribute promotional information regarding Walk and Roll to School Week to students and parents. The Family Bicycling Workshop has been published in the Dublin Rec Guide and through the City's NotifyMe email and text message notification system. ATTACHMENTS: 1. 2014 Walk and Roll to School Week Proclamation Page 2 of 2 A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF D UBLIN CALIFORNIA Declaring the week of October 6th through October 10'h as "Walk and Roll to School Week" in the City of Dublin WHEREAS, the City of Dublin acknowledges that walking and bicycling to and from school establishes connections between families, schools and the community, and increases awareness of issues surrounding physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, and the environment, and WHEREAS, Safe Routes to Schools is an international movement with programs in more than 40 countries and all 50 states that strives to increase the percentage of students and parents utilizing alternative methods of travel to and from school, such as walking or bicycling, through the provision of resources, encouragement, and expertise; and WHEREAS, the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program is promoting the month of October as International Walk to School Month, an annual event that encourages students and parents to walk and bicycle to and from school; and WHEREAS, the City of Dublin is coordinating Walk and Roll to School Week events with Safe Routes to Schools and Dublin Unified School District during the first week of International Walk to School Month: and Whereas, Public Works staff in concert with the Dublin Unified School District will provide educational and safety information on walking and bicycling at the participating schools. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Tim Sbran ti, Mayor of Dublin, on behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim the week of October 6th through October 10`h as "Walk and Roll to School Week" in the City of Dublin, and I call upon all parents and students registered with Dublin Schools to consider walking and bicycling to and from school throughout the week.
