HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 018-91 Persian Gulf WarRESOLUTION NO. 18 - 91 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA SUPPORTING AND COMMENDING THE MEN AND WOMEN ON THE FRONT LINES OF THE PERSIAN GULF WAR WHEREAS, the Persian Gulf conflict started on August 2, 1990, when the President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, invaded'the neighboring country of Kuwait, a member of the Arab League and a member of the United Nations; and WHEREAS, the United Nations passed several resolutions urging Saddam Hussein to withdraw from Kuwait by January 15, 1991, or be subject to forceful action; and WHEREAS, 28 countries, representing five continents, imposed economic sanctions on Iraq and continued extensive efforts to reach a peaceful resolution to this conflict, but without success; and WHEREAS, more than 450,000 American military personnel, some who are from or have families and friends in Dublin, have been deployed to Saudi Arabia in preparation for potential conflict; and WHEREAS, U.S. and allied forces began attack on military targets in Iraq and Kuwait on January 16, 1991, referred to as "Operation Desert Storm". NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Dublin, California enthusiastically supports the men and women of the armed forces who are carrying out their missions in the Persian Gulf region with professional excellence, courage and dedicated patriotism; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council extends their best wishes to these men and women for a safe and quick return home.
