DESCRIPTION: Staff is currently exploring the installation of a marquee to be located in a
planting area in front of the Senior Center building. The study is in the preliminary stages and has
included researching types of marquees that would be appropriate for the site, identifying potential
locations and obtaining preliminary cost estimates from several vendors.
The marquee would give staff the capability to advertise senior programming and City events.
Two locations are under consideration, one is the lawn area in front of the building near the Starward
Drive, and the other is the groundcover planting area near the intersection at Donohue Drive. The size of
the marquee is determined in part by what is allowed per the City of Dublin Municipal Code and is a
consideration in the selection of the final marquee location.
The City of Dublin Municipal Code includes Sign Regulations which describe the requirements for
different types of allowable signs. The proposed marquee falls within two categories, it is both a
"Freestanding" and "Electronic Readerboard" sign. Per the sign regulations freestanding signs may be a
maximum of 15 square feet at the back of the property and can increase in size by 2.5 square feet for
every additional foot away from the property line. Because the location at the Donohue intersection is
set back further from the property line the sign in this location could be single sided, with its back
towards the building, and measure approximately 65 square feet (about ten foot long by six foot tall).
The lawn area near the Starward Drive intersection has less of a setback and therefore a sign in this
location would need to be smaller, approximately 40 square feet, but it could be placed perpendicular to
the building and be double sided. It is anticipated that the sign in either location would rest on a small
pediment, approximately 12-18 tall, which could be faced with slate tile or stucco to match the building.
The next steps include determining the marquee location, finalizing the marquee size and design,
obtaining the final cost estimate, and a selecting a qualified sign vendor. The installation process also
includes obtaining a Conditional Use Permit from the Planning Commission which is required for
Electronic Readerboard signs. Sign construction requires a building permit from the Building
Department. Staff is proceeding with these steps in an effort to move the project forward towards
completion.
