DCirv oF SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE
UBLIN MEETING DATE: May 7, 2015
SUBJECT: Senior Center Marquee
Prepared by Meghan Tiernan, Park & Facilities Development Coordinator
ATTACHMENTS: None
RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report and Recommend to Parks and Community Services
Commission approval to proceed with project
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Funds to purchase and install the marquee are anticipated to be
approximately $60,000. It is anticipated that the Dublin Senior Foundation will contribute funds towards
construction of the sign and the remainder will be funded by the City.
DESCRIPTION: Staff is currently exploring the installation of a marquee to be located in a
planting area in front of the Senior Center building on the west side along Amador Valley Boulevard. The
study has included researching types of marquees that would be appropriate for the site, identifying
potential locations, determining the appropriate size of the marquee for the site, and obtaining
preliminary cost estimates from several vendors. Staff presented sign and location options to the Senior
Center Advisory Committee at the March 5, 2015 meeting and is returning with the final conceptual
design alternatives.
The marquee would give staff the capability to advertise senior programming and City events.
Two types of signs were considered, one a "lollipop" ,style sign mounted on a single post above the
ground and the other mounted on a lower pedestal with the sign at eye level to passing traffic. Staff
performed a field review of the potential for each sign. Due to above ground obstructions including
signal light posts and taller trees Staff determined that a "lollipop" sign would not be clearly visible to
passers-by. The conceptual alternative being presented is a two-sided electronic readerboard sign
mounted on a pedestal with architectural detailing to match the building. The overall scale of the sign is
similar to the existing Dublin Senior Center / Wicklow Square sign to the east of the building along
Donohue Street.
Two locations were considered, one was the lawn area in front of the building near the Starward Drive,
and the other is the groundcover planting area near the intersection at Donohue Drive. During the field
review Staff determined that the location near Starward Drive is more visible to passing traffic in both
directions along Amador Valley Boulevard. Staff has/will mock up the sign location in the field to
determine the appropriate location in relation to the building and sidewalk and to optimize visibility
from the street.

Staff is proposing removal of the lawn in this area and replacement with a woody groundcover to
impede foot traffic in order to address the concerns regarding potential vandalism expressed by the
Advisory Committee at the March 5 meeting. The landscape improvements would include replacing the
existing spray irrigation with drip irrigation and may be eligible for a lawn conversion rebate from Zone
7. The rebate program reimburses 40% of the lawn conversion and drip irrigation costs for qualifying
projects. Staff will continue to explore the possibility of the lawn conversion rebate for this project.
The current cost estimate for the conceptual design alternatives including the landscape modifications is
approximately $60,000. it is anticipated that the Dublin Senior Foundation will contribute funds and the
remainder will be funded by the City.
Staff will present the final concept to the Parks & Community Services Commission on May 18, 2015.
Sign construction requires a building permit from the Building Department. Staff is proceeding with
these steps in an effort to move the project forward towards completion.
