Re: JanuarylFebruary Community Strategy Forwns,
Dear Honorable Members of the Dublin City Council:
A number of our members attended some of the rerent Forum discussions on Dublin's Fiscal
Position and Identification of the Budget Priorities. We thank you for hosting the event and
opening it to community input.
Our reason for writing as a group is to fonnally request that Dublin consider restoring the
funding ofthe 14 hours of library closure due to the budget shortfall a few years ago.
(1) Current library attendance averages 6400 people per week (1065 per day) maintaining the
pre-cut levels, but in a much busier enviroDDlent;
(2) Additional programs such as Job Search Help, Resume Help, and Children's programming
such as Kids Book Group, Book Buddies, Summer Chill Zone etc., account for an increase
of almost 3000 attendees per year since the cuts; the Homework Help Center is now at
capacity during its Monday-Thursday time period;
(3) The Library Staff oontinues to add new programs that addresses community needs as well as
Fun projects such as the Bookmark Competition, Family Fun Nights, etc.
Our library is a hub of activity that provides so much more than just books: access to computers,
:free wi-fi for private laptops, DVDs in English and other languages, tax help, . legal help from the
Lawyer in the Library, genealogical help, literacy programs, eBooks for eReaders, programs
designed for all ages from 10 months (Mother Goose on the Loose) to Seniors. It is a place that
provides not only enrichment of the mind but also a sense of community as it uses 34 teen
volunteers to help younger students in the Homework Center and to help 1 st - 3rd graders read in
the Book Buddies Program.
The Friends also provides many volunteers for library help as well as the funding for most of the
library programs. We are in the library every day and have marveled at how much our residents
love our library~ We also are honored to work with our dedicated, knowledgeable and helpful
library staff.
We hope that you will consider our request to restore the previously cut hours.
