The City Council will also recognize the Dublin Pride Week Poster Contest and Essay Contest winners. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Sufficient funds were included in the Fiscal Year 2011-2012 Budget. In-kind donations were provided by the following organizations: Amador Valley Industries, Dublin Lion's Club, Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club, Dublin San Ramon Services District (DSRSD), Pete's Coffee, Mimi's Cafe, and Zone 7. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council receive the 2012 Dublin Pride Week activities report, recognize the sponsors and the poster and essay contest winners. ~, Reviewed By Assistant City Manager H _~ ... ~µ, Submitted By" Assistant to the City Manager DESCRIPTION: Dublin Pride Week was celebrated from Saturday, April 28 to Saturday, May 5, 2012. A number of activities and projects were conducted and are summarized below. Dublin Pride Week Poster Contest All students from both public and private schools in the City of Dublin were invited to participate in this year's Dublin Pride Poster and Essay Contests. The students were asked to create posters that reflected topics including clean-up projects, recycling, volunteering or any other idea that reflects taking pride in our community. This year an essay contest was also included. The essay theme was "Why My City is An All-America City." As in previous years, the Page 1 of 6 ITEM NO. 3.3 Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club volunteered to coordinate the poster and essay contest, which included distributing the materials, judging the posters and essays, and distributing the certificates of participation. Each of the Poster Contest and Essay Contest participants will receive a Certificate of Appreciation. The City awards first and second prizes to individuals from each of the following grade categories: Kindergarten-1St grade, 2nd grade-3rd grade, 4t" grade-5t" grade, 6t" grade-8t" grade, and 9t" grade-12t grade, as well as an overall grand prize winner. The grand prize winners will receive a $100 Target gift card, the first prize winners receive a $25 Target gift card, and second prize winners receive a $15 Target gift card. The grand prize, first prize, and second prize winners also have their posters and essays displayed at the Civic Center and will be presented with Certificates of Merit. Additionally, a Classroom Award is given in the amount of $200 to the teachers of the Grand Prize Winners of the Poster Contest and Essay Contest to be used in their classrooms. Volunteers met at 8:00 a.m. at the Heritage Park to receive instructions and supplies for the various projects throughout the community. Mayor Sbranti began the event with a welcoming address and word of thanks to the volunteers. Volunteers were given reusable shopping bags which contained $4 in carrot cash, a seed bookmark provided by AVI, and Fitness Challenge Forms. Snacks were Page 3 of 6 also provided including muffins donated by Mimi's Cafe and coffee donated by Peets. At the completion of the projects, all volunteers were invited to a free barbecue provided by the Dublin Lion's Club. Volunteer Day consisted of the following projects: Senior Projects: There were approximately 150 volunteers that made up the Senior Project Teams. The teams were able to assist 31 senior homes with a variety of activities that ranged from cleaning windows to minor home repair. These projects were coordinated by the Senior Support Program of the Tri-Valley, which assists the City in finding Dublin seniors who are in need of some assistance. Frederiksen Elementary School: Approximately 20 volunteers were sent to Frederickson Elementary to do weeding, planting and trimming, as well re-painting the red curbs. Fallon Middle School: The Fallon School's California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) Club worked on improving the Fallon Middle School landscaping by cleaning out flower beds, pulling weeds and trimming. The CJSF group totaled more than 50 individuals. John Green Elementary School: Approximately 20 volunteers were sent to John Green Elementary to help with weeding and trimming as well re-painting the red curbs and staining the garden fence. Wells Middle School: Approximately 75 volunteers were sent to Wells Middle School to help with painting, spreading mulch, weeding and trimming. Non-Profit Assistance Projects: Approximately 20 volunteers were sent to the Easter Seals Kaleidoscope School to help with window and floor washing, weeding, sweeping, spreading mulch, and trimming. City Park Projects: Approximately 250 volunteers assisted with beautification and clean-up projects at various park locations within the City. For example, many volunteers assisted in wood chip spreading at Ironhorse Trail (near BART), at Fallon Sports Park and on Central Parkway between Grafton Street and Chancery. Several other groups of volunteers helped with painting projects, which included the fountain near the play area at Shannon Park, the seat walls at Shannon Park, the benches in the Civic Center Courtyard, and a bathroom at Emerald Glen Park. Another group of volunteers completed a planting project at Ted Fairfield Park. Volunteers also painted benches, cleaned buildings, swept pathways, pulled weeds and spread wood chips at the Heritage Center and Historic Park, which included the cemetery. City Creek Cleanups: Approximately 20 volunteers were sent to pick up litter at two of the City's creeks (South San Ramon Creek and Alamo Creek North). Approximately 7 garbage bags of trash were removed from these two creeks. Food Drive: This year, Dublin Pride Week included a Food Drive organized by City Staff and Pride Week Committee members. Collection bins were set up at the two Safeway grocery stores, Sprouts Farmer's Market and Grocery Outlet to collect non-perishable food items during Dublin Pride Week. Collection bins were also set up at Volunteer Day. This year, a record amount of food was donated. The City was able to collect approximately forty 32-gallon bins of food. All food collected was donated to the Dublin Children's Emergency Council and the Well Christian Community. Page 4 of 6 Fitness Challenge This is the second year in which Dublin Pride Week included a fitness challenge. The Dublin Pride Week Committee decided to promote the challenge more and to create a simpler form for students to use. The fitness challenge forms were distributed in the reusable bags distributed to all of the volunteers on Volunteer Day. Additionally, the City distributed the fitness challenge forms to all of the schools in the City. The program centered on collecting points for various fitness or good health related activities that are completed throughout Pride Week. Residents and students were asked to keep a daily total and submit it to the City at the end of the week. All participants will be entered into a raffle drawing for a chance to win prizes, which include a backpack donated by REI and gift cards donated by Sports Authority. Farmer's Market Grand Opening The Grand Opening of the Farmer's Market was held on Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Emerald Glen Park. The opening night was a great success and was well attended. The Dublin San Ramon Services District and Zone 7 Water Agency sponsored a "Water Conservation Zone" at the Farmers Market where residents were able to apply for money-saving rebates, enter awater-efficient landscape contest, and take home free, practical information on water-wise living. Bike Flat Tire Repair Clinic A Bike Flat Tire Repair Clinic was held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Amador Valley Boulevard and the Ironhorse Trail. Individuals at the clinic received a free bike check-up and instructions for minor bike repairs. Household Hazardous Waste Event The City sponsored another successful household hazardous waste drop off event, which was managed by Amador Valley Industries and held at the MicroDental parking lot on Arnold Drive on Saturday, May 5t". The City's annual household hazardous waste event ensures that materials such as paint, used oil, batteries, pesticides and other harmful chemicals are disposed of properly. In total, there were 500 residents that participated with approximately 500 bags of compost given away. This is the second year in the row that all of the appointments have been filled. 2012 Dublin Pride Week Committee At the forefront of this year's activities was the Dublin Pride Week Committee. The Committee comes together each year to plan and organize each Pride Week activity. This year, the Committee was made up of various community members and organizational representatives.
