DESCRIPTION:
During the school year, the Dublin Public Library has two programs for which teens may
volunteer their time and satisfy community service requirements for school.
Book Buddies is a program that pairs a teen volunteer with a child in first through third grades,
to help the children practice and strengthen their reading skills. Book Buddies meet with the
same student once a week. For 30 minutes, they read to each other and engage in fun reading-
related activities. The Book Buddies Program occurs Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to
4:30 pm. Book Buddies have served 48 children during this school year. In order to participate
in this volunteer program, a teen needs to commit to one hour per week.
Homework Help is a program that provides children in third through eighth grades with help
finishing their daily school assignments. These include math, spelling, grammar, science, and

history. Homework Help is a drop-in service available Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to
5:30 pm and serves an average of 50 students per month. In order to participate in this
program, a teen needs to commit to working two hours per week.
Both of these volunteer programs require a teen to show a high level of reliability, interpersonal
skills in relating to children, as well as demonstrate excellence in their own academic pursuits.
Due to their efforts, well over 100 children have been helped to be more successful at school
and enjoy the companionship of a teen mentor or buddy.
Many of the teen volunteers are seniors and will be graduating. Some have accumulated many
hours; all have touched the lives of their young protégés.
