Resolution in Support of Save Oakland Sports

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City Council will consider a resolution supporting the efforts of Save Oakland Sports to keep
the Oakland Raiders, Oakland Athletics, and Golden State Warriors in Oakland and the East
Bay.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council consider the proposed resolution supporting the efforts
to Save Oakland Sports and take the appropriate action.

DESCRIPTION:
At the June 19, 2012 City Council meeting, Councilmember Swalwell requested that the City
Council consider its support for the efforts of Save Oakland Sports to keep the Oakland Raider,
Oakland Athletics, and Golden State Warriors in Oakland.
As way of background, Save Oakland Sports (www.saveoaklandsports.org) is a non-profit,
grass-roots organization that wishes to work with the elected officials in Oakland and Alameda
County to develop a plan to convince the Oakland Raiders, Oakland Athletics, and the Golden
State Warriors to remain in the East Bay. The group sees the retention of these sports
franchises, as well as the construction of world-class stadiums, as beneficial to the entire East
Bay economy. The organization wants to build the new facilities, without the use of general fund
money, to create new development, jobs, and tourism.

Staff has prepared a draft resolution (Attachment 1) for consideration by the City Council.

SUPPORT THE EFFORTS TO
SAVE OAKLAND SPORTS
WHEREAS,
the Oakland Raiders, the Oakland Athletics, and the Golden State Warriors
make a significant contribution to the East Bay; and
WHEREAS
, the Raiders, Athletics, and Warriors are all looking to build new facilities in
the Bay Area; and
WHEREAS
, the construction of new stadiums would create thousands of temporary and
permanent construction jobs and benefit fans, franchises and the entire East Bay economy; and
WHEREAS
, Save Oakland Sports (SOS) is a grassroots group whose goal is to develop
a plan to convince the Raiders, A’s and Warriors to stay and build world-class stadiums in
Oakland, without using General Fund money, for the benefit of fans, their franchises, the
economy and the entire East Bay.
WHEREAS
, Save Oakland Sports hopes to work with government, business and
community leaders to demonstrate to these teams that Oakland and the East Bay offers the
nation’s best stadium location and opportunity, fan support and long-term economic stability for
their franchises.
NOW, THEREFORE,
the City Council of the City of Dublin does hereby support the
efforts of the City of Oakland, Alameda County, Save Oakland Sports, and business and fan
groups to convince these teams to stay and build new world class stadiums in the East Bay;
