2012 Walk to School Week

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
During the first week of October, the City of Dublin will work with the Dublin Unified School
District and Safe Routes to Schools to promote participation in International Walk to School
Month, an annual event that encourages students and parents to consider walk and bicycling to

school. This proclamation will declare the week of October 1 through 7 “Walk and Roll to
School Week” in the City of Dublin.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The Fiscal Year 2012-13 budget includes sufficient funding for the costs related to Walk and
Roll to School Week events and advertising. The total Walk and Roll to School Week budget
will be funded by Measure B Bicycle/Pedestrian Funds.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council approve the proclamation declaring the week of October
stth
1 through 7 as “Walk and Roll to School Week” in the City of Dublin.

DESCRIPTION:
The Safe Routes to Schools program, found in more than 40 countries and in all 50 states,
endeavors to increase the percentage of students and parents utilizing alternative methods of
travel to and from school through the provision of resources, encouragement, and expertise.
The City of Dublin has coordinated local Walk and Roll to School Week events with the Alameda
County Safe Routes to Schools program as part of its annual International Walk to School
Month event.
Last year, three Dublin schools participated in Walk and Roll to School Week: Dublin
Elementary, Frederiksen Elementary, and Murray Elementary. The following Dublin Unified

Schools have registered with the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program and will be

participating in Walk and Roll to School Week October 1 through 5: Dougherty Elementary,
Green Elementary, Murray Elementary, and Dublin High School. The remaining elementary
schools in Dublin were invited to register Walk and Roll to School Week events with the City of
Dublin.
Scheduled event activities include a Walking School Bus, a technique that establishes adult-
supervised walking groups; the creation of a mode chart to track the different transportation
methods used by students; and the distribution of giveaways and refreshments to rewards
participating students.
City Staff has communicated with Dublin Unified School District regarding the program and will
notify Dublin Police Services’ Patrol Unit of the anticipated increase in pedestrian traffic during
Walk and Roll to School Week.
Students and parents will be given the opportunity to practice their bicycling skills prior to Walk
and Roll to School Week at a free Family Bicycling Workshop on Saturday, September 29 at
Frederiksen Elementary School. The Bike Mobile, a mobile bike repair unit funded by Alameda
County Transportation Commission and Metropolitan Transportation Commission, will be
present to offer free bike check-ups and minor repairs.
NOTICING REQUIREMENTS/PUBLIC OUTREACH:
City Staff will work with Dublin Unified School District to prepare and distribute promotional
information regarding Walk and Roll to School Week to students and parents.

“Walk and Roll to School Week”
WHEREAS, the City of Dublin acknowledges that walking and bicycling to and from school establishes connections between
families, schools and the community, and increases awareness of issues surrounding physical activity among children, pedestrian
safety, traffic congestion, and the environment; and
WHEREAS, Safe Routes to Schools is an international movement with programs in more than 40 countries and all 50 states that
strives to increase the percentage of students and parents utilizing alternative methods of travel to and from school, such as
walking or bicycling, through the provision of resources, encouragement, and expertise; and
WHEREAS, the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program is promoting the month of October as International Walk to
School Month, an annual event that encourages students and parents to walk and bicycle to and from school; and
WHEREAS, the City of Dublin is coordinating Walk and Roll to School Week events with Safe Routes to Schools and several
Dublin schools during the first week of International Walk to School Month, where participating students will receive
refreshments and giveaways.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Tim Sbranti, Mayor of Dublin, on behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby

proclaim the week of October 1 through 7 as “Walk and Roll to School Week” in the City of Dublin, and I call upon all parents
and students registered with Dublin Schools to consider walking and bicycling to and from school throughout the week.
