DESCRIPTION • Founders Week Festivities will take
place July 27 through August 2, 1987 . In past years, Founders
Week was planned and organized primarily by the Dublin Historical
Preservation Association. - For 1987, the scope of Founders Week
has changed somewhat. In addition to the traditional Mayors
• Reception, Merchant Arts and Crafts Festival, and DHPA BBQ and
Dance, a number of new activities are planned as follows:
1. Concourse de Elegance
2 . New Car Concourse
3 . de Elegance and New Car Parade
4 . Pancake Breakfast at Concourse' s
5 . Food, Drink and Game Booths provided by service clubs
and non-profit groups
6 . "Battle of the Businesses" games and corporate
challenges
7 . Model Car Contest
8 . Wine Tasting of Valley Wines
9 . Promotional items sales, i.e. Bells of Ireland,
Shamrocks, Wine Glasses, Irish Coffee, Cups and T-
shirts
The purpose behind the expanded format for Founders Week is to
raise funds for Dublin based non-profit organizations and service
clubs that (a) promote and enkindle a sense of community pride in
Dublin, (b) promote Dublin' s history as an integral part of pride
in community, (c) promote Dublin as a regional retail business
center, and (d) allocate festival proceeds for needed Dublin
community services.
The steering committee, comprised of representatives from service
clubs and the Chamber of Commerce, has been meeting for the past
few months to begin the planning necessary for an event of this
magnitude. It has been suggested that the City also become
involved by providing a representative from the City Council and
City Staff to serve on the steering committee. The structure of
this committee is such that each member will chair or co-chair
one of nine subcommittees as well as provide membership for the
remaining eight subcommittees.
Staff is of the opinion that it would be beneficial for the City
to be represented on the steering committee. However, it is not
feasible to provide a staff person to serve on each subcommittee.
Therefore, it is recommended that the City Council appoint a
member of the Council and the staff to the steering committee
with the understanding that additional representation from the
City is not possible. As the Recreation Department has been
involved with similar events, it is suggested that the staff
appointee be from the Recreation Department.
