CITY OF DUBLIN
To: Mayors, and Chairmen of County Boards of Supervisors
Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death for persons under
age 45, and the fourth leading cause of death for all age groups. Public
opinion research shows increasing concern for this preventable loss of life,
and more organizations in California are getting involved in programs and
activities designed to reduce the number of traffic collisions.
In an effort to emphasize the importance of traffic safety for all roadway
users, and to provide the framework for continuing public awareness of
traffic safety problems and solutions, Governor Deukmejian has issued a
proclamation declaring May 22-28, 1988, as CALIFORNIA TRAFFIC SAFETY WEEK.
In his message, the Governor stated that "public and private institutions,
along with concerned individuals, can promote traffic safety by increasing
public awareness of proper safety methods." We hope you will assist in this
endeavor by issuing a local proclamation in support of Traffic Safety Week.
The proclamation can serve as a reaffirmation of your commitment to provide
for the safety of your constituents, and as a catalyst for others in the
community to develop or expand their traffic safety programs.
Please send a copy of your proclamation and any press releases addressing
Traffic Safety Week to the Office of Traffic Safety, 7000 Franklin Blvd. ,
Blvd. , 1330, Sacramento, California 95823.
If you wish to present a proclamation in a formal media ceremony and do not
have a local contact that could accept the proclamation on behalf of the
traffic safety community, please contact Suzi Haywood, Local Events
Coordinating Committee Chairperson, at (916) 445-0527; she may be able to
assist you.
Good luck in your traffic safety efforts, and thank you for your support in
reducing deaths and injuries on California roadways.
Sincerely,
PETER K. O'ROURKE
