DESCRIPTION • The City Council Civic Center Subcommittee has
developed tentative plans for the Civic Center Dedication. The purpose of
this report is to establish the date's and allow Staff to proceed with
arrangements .
The proposed schedule has been divided into two events. The first will be
an evening reception tentatively scheduled for 7 :00 p.m. to 9 : 00 p.m. ,
October 19, 1989 . This event would include a reception for elected
officials from surrounding agencies, the press, and other dignitaries . A
brief ceremony and introduction will take place in the City Council Chamber.
This will be followed by a reception which will be located in the main
lobby. Escorted tours will be provided. The entertainment will consist of
chamber music. The Regional Meeting Room will be set up with tables to
allow people to sit down. The Committee is also reviewing possible momentos
which can be provided to the guests as they leave.
The Community Event is scheduled for Saturday, October 21 , 1989 from 10 : 00
a.m. to 2 : 00 p.m. This event will be open to the public and the activities
scheduled are intended to generate a "street faire" type atmosphere. This
will be an opportunity for the community to tour the facility and
participate in a community event. The tentative schedule is to begin at
10 : 00 a.m. with a flag raising ceremony in the public plaza. Staff will
attempt to schedule one of the local school bands . The City Council would
conduct an official dedication with brief speeches and a ceremonial ribbon
cutting. Escorted Tours would be handled following the ceremony and until
the conclusion at 2 : 00 p.m. The Committee has suggested that light
refreshments including popcorn, lemonade, and cookies be provided in the
courtyard. The entertainment will consist of clowns, barber shop quartet,
and other types of individuals who can move through the crowd. The momento
to be provided for this event would be a pin in the shape of a key to the
City. The promotional literature would indicate that the momentos would be
provided to the first 1 , 000 attendees.
Mayor Moffatt and Councilmember Jeffery, who participated on the
Subcommittee, will be available to answer any questions. It is requested
that the City Council contribute any additional suggestions, approve the
tentative plans, and authorize Staff to proceed.
