Correspondence from John R . Sharkey , President RECOMMENDATION Consider Request FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Funds are currently not included in FY89-90 Budget . Should the Council grant the request , funds would need to be transferred from the Unallocated Reserve . DESCRIPTION • Correspondence has been received by John R . Sharkey , President of the Tri-Valley Minor Hockey Association , Inc . requesting that the City donate $2 , 000 to their association (Exhibit A) . Tri-Valley Minor Hockey Association , a California State non-profit corporation , is a youth hockey organization playing at Dublin Iceland . Their current membership of 135 is comprised of 25 Dublin residents . The requested $2 , 000 in funding is to purchase two sets of goalie pads and a lighted scoreboard . In the past , the City has not made direct financial contributions to youth sports organizations but instead made public facilities , i . e . Dublin Sports Grounds , available for use . Staff feels that by contributing funds to Tri-Valley Minor Hockey Association , a precedent may be established whereby other youth sports groups may come to the City requesting funds . Therefore it is staff ' s recommendation that the City Council deny the request for funding . Box 2302 Dublin, CA 94568-0230 C I Y I" OCT_ 191989 October 17, 1989 CITY OF DUBLIN The Honorable Mayor Paul Moffatt 100 Civic Plaza Dublin, CA 94568 Dear Mayor Moffatt: As President of Tri-Valley Hockey Club which represents a youth hockey organization playing at Dublin Iceland, I would appreciate your support and understanding of the following request. As a parent of two sons, I have been a "member" of Tri-Valley Minor Hockey Associations since 1977, when my oldest son first started playing youth hockey at age five. I have since grown within our club and have also come to the realization that our struggle to keep youth hockey alive and surviving in Northern California has been a challenge. Tri-Valley Minor Hockey Association ranks No. 1 in membership in the State of California. This includes competition that stretches from Santa Rosa to the large metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Diego. Year-round we have tournaments and teams traveling into this growing and prominent area adding to the tax revenue of Dublin. They eat in local restaurants, stay in the limited number of motels, fill their gas tanks, and generally contribute revenue locally' as well as to Dublin Iceland. My request is simple. Please see your way clear to donate $2,000 as a City that fully appreciates its commitment to a "community" that recognizes a youth sport that returns much more in tax revenue than has been recognized; but, more importantly, will help us realize that the City of Dublin cares for its business community as well as its youth.
