The total enrollment for Instructional Programs was 1141 . Classes which
were cancelled due to low enrollment were Scuba Diving , Safety Training for
Swimming Coaches , Basic Water Safety , Emergency Water Safety and Water
Safety Instructor . With the exception of the above classes , the
Instructional Swim Program was extremely popular . In fact we were unable to
meet the great demand , and in some cases were forced to turn people away due
to limited pool space , pool time and lack of instructors . Staff will be
exploring ways in which to better meet the demand for lessons prior to next
season .

The program was well received by the community and provided children with an
alternative to staying at home during Summer vacation .
Preschool
The traditional preschool classes are not held during the Summer but
Tenderfoot Day Camp was scheduled for 3-5 year olds . This Summer Tenderfoot
Day Camp was offered for three two-week sessions and was filled to capacity
for each session . Camp was held at Nielsen School due to the renovation of
Shannon Center .
Senior Citizens
June was covered in the Spring 1989 Recreation Report .
July was a busy month for the Senior Center . The highlight of the month was
the official celebration of the Center ' s first birthday , July 14 , 1989 .
Eighty-five (85 ) seniors attended the celebration and buffet luncheon .
A birthday cake , door prizes and a sing-a-long were part of the days
festivities .
A bus trip to the new Nut Tree Outlet Mall was attended by 37 seniors .
Other highlights of the month included health screening and a Calligraphy
Workshop . Average attendance for July was 49 .
We discovered as the Summer progressed that series classes were less
effective than a one or two-day workshop format . In August we conducted two
one-day Cooking Workshops and a one-day workshop on Living Wills . All three
were well attended . A bus trip to Bodega Bay was enjoyed by 43 elders and
to celebrate the long hot Summer , we held a Dog Days of Summer Bar-B-Que .
The August meeting of the Senior Center Advisory Committee was a field trip
to the Hayward Senior Center where the Committee was given a tour of the
facility and joined their seniors for lunch . The Committee has decided that
an occasional visit to other senior centers is both informative and
educational . Plans are being made for future visits . Average attendance
for August was 51 .
Teens
This Summer , Club Teen was introduced for teens sixth through ninth grade .
Club Teen activities were held on Tuesdays , Thursdays and alternate Fridays ,
and consisted of three areas of programming - "Pool Bashes" , "Hanging-Out
Days" , and "Get Away Days" .
The Pool Bashes were held every other Friday , beginning with the kick-off
Pool Bash on Friday , June 23 . Pool Bashes consisted of a combination of
structured activities and free swim. Registrations for other Club Teen
activities were taken at the Pool Bashes as well . Pool Bashes cost $1 . 50
each or $3 .00 for a Pool Bash card . The card enabled the holder to free
admission into all four Pool Bashes at no extra charge .
"Hanging Out Days" were on-site activity days with special themes such as
Hollywood Pizza Party , Ice Cream Sundae Building , an Overnight at Shannon
and Wet- ' N-Wild . "Get Away Days" were field trips and excursions off-site ,
such as an A ' s Game and Shadow Cliffs .
