DESCRIPTION:
On September 15, 2015, the City Council approved a contract with SwattlMiers Architects to
design the renovation of the City Council Chambers. The following changes /updates to the
Chambers are included in the project scope: replace lighting, install station monitors at each City
Councilmember's station at the dais, replace furniture, and complete various technology
upgrades, such as implementing microphone enhancements. One of the more significant
changes is the redesign of the City Council dais, which includes three options recommended by
SwattlMiers Architects for the placement of station monitors. Feedback on and selection of a
preferred option from the City Council is required before the final design of the dais can be
completed.
The three options for the placement of monitors for City Councilmembers are as follows:
1) glass desk top with monitor below (Attachment 1); 2) monitor installed in a recess at the back

of the desk (Attachment 2); and 3) monitor installed in a recess at the back of desk and recess
at side of desk for keyboard (Attachment 3). The pros and cons of each option are outlined
below.
1. Glass desk top with monitor below
Pros
• no monitor visible to audience
• clean desktop
• all cabling except microphone is below the desk.
Cons
• Reduced knee room due to monitor
• Papers on desktop will cover up the glass viewing window.
• Looking down at the screen will be visible to the audience.
2. Recess at the back of the desk for cabling and monitor only
Pros
• Allows clean space for cabling
• Allows space for any monitor today or a replacement in the future.
Cons
• Keyboard and mouse are left on the desktop for all to see, which may look a little
untidy.
3. Recess at the back of desk & recess at side of desk for keyboard
Pros
• Allows clean space for cabling
• Allows space for any monitor today or a replacement in the future.
• Keyboard and mouse can be put away at the end of the day
Cons
• Dirt and dust might collect in the keyboard slot, though not hard to clean.
Staff requests that the City Council provide feedback on its preferred design option.
