Cochran, Murray School District Superintendent , dated January 28 , 1985 RECOMMENDATION kconsider .A FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION The City has received a letter from Dr. Richard F. Cochran , Superintendent , Murray School District , regarding the Dublin Connection. Dr. Cochran has indicated that the Irish Marathon Runner , Dick Hooper, will be in our area from July 15 , 1985 to July . 21 , 1985 . Dr. Cochran has inquired as to whether or not the City Council would be interested in either hosting a reception or undertaking some form of recognition for Mr. Hooper. Box 2340 Dublin, CA 94568 Dear Pete: The Dublin Connection is moving into its second stage, that of receiving the Irish Marathoner Dick Hooper July 15 through Marathon Day in San Francisco Sunday, July 21. I will be picking up Dick on July 14; and, thus far, luncheons on July 16 and July 18 are the only engagements arranged for him. Would you and/or your fellow Council Members like to have a reception or some form of recognition for our visitor from Ireland? If so, I would appreciate your informing me of your pleasure as soon as possible, so an agenda can be set up that meets with the City's approval and also our visitor's. I will await your response. The "big" marathons of the world with their huge numbers participating and spectating don't just happen 6R" they have to be organised. In Dublin the organising is y done by the Business Houses Athletic Association. The BHAA is a young but vibrant sports body dedicated to inter- . , j firm athletics. It has organised the Dublin City Marathon since it began in 1980.The unqualified success of this great race is due to the voluntary efforts of the men and women who make up the BHAA committee. The BHAA also organise running events on most •'�' � � weekends throughout the year.There are 307 affiliated firms and 3,000 plus athletes registered with the Association. Events include cross-country races,road races and track and field events. Each event usually includes a ladies' and a " men's race, and is enerally followed b g y post-race refresh- ments which make each BHAA event a social as well as a sporting occasion.
