DESCRIPTION: TJKM has suggested restriping - of both Regional Street and Amador Plaza Road, between Amador Valley Boulevard and Dublin Boulevard. The existing streets have one lane in each direction. The restriping would add a continuous two-way left turn lane as a safety measure. The lane would be a storage area for traffic turning left into driveways and an acceleration area for traffic turning left out of driveways . A proposed striping plan will be available at the public hearing, and driveway and parking impacts will be discussed. The street widths from curb to curb are 52 feet which does not require parking to be eliminated in order to add these left turn lanes . Some adjustments to parking and no parking areas may be needed, however, to provide clearances and sight distances at the driveways . ----------------------------------------------------------------- ITEM NO. 4, COPIES TO: MEMORANDUM DATE: January 25, 1985 TO: Lee Thompson, City Engineer City of Dublin FROM: Chris D. Kinzel TJKM SUBJECT: Possible Restriping of Regional and Amador Plaza It is my suggestion that the City consider the restriping of both Regional Street and Amador Plaza Road generally between Amador Valley Boulevard and Dublin Boulevard from its present two lane status to three lanes. The third lane would be a center continuous two-way left-turn lane. A possible striping scheme for the existing 52 foot curb-to-curb width streets would be an 11 foot center turning lane, two 13 foot through lanes and two eight foot parking lanes. Under this proposal , no parking would be required to be removed although as a part of the study I am requesting, we would like to consider adjusting the existing parking and no-parking areas to provide proper clearances from driveways and sight distances from heavier used driveways. Regional is heavily parked by commuters who catch the bus or form carpools in this area and it is not our intention to provide any wholesale removal of parking. The major purpose of the center two-way left-turn lane is to increase safety by creating a continuous left-turn lane for traffic turning into driveways and at the same time creating an acceleration area for traffic left-turning from driveways. The 52 foot curb-to-curb width is ideal for the three lane striping. In order to restripe the road some minor plans and some additional parking studies would be required. If parking changes are necessary, this would need to be enacted by the City Council . Obviously there would be some costs connected with the restriping itself. The exact (amount of these costs would be determined during the proposed study along with an appropriate implementation schedule, either for the current or future fiscal year. The estimated TJKM costs to conduct a study and prepare sketches suitable for use by striping crew would be approximately $500, including engineering and drafting. I am requesting your authorization to conduct this study. No restriping would be done until completion of our study and approval of our specific recommendations by the City. psw 15701
