Foss, City Manager " SUBJECT: Report on 2016 Dublin Pride Week Activities Prepared by Kathy Southern, Environmental Technician EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: CITY CLERK File #150 -80 The City Council will receive a report on the planned activities for the 2016 Dublin Pride Week, scheduled for April 30 — May 7, 2016. FINANCIAL IMPACT: Sufficient funds are included in the Fiscal Year 2015 -16 Budget for Dublin Pride Week activities. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council receive the 2016 Dublin Pride Week activities report. ubmitted Public Works Director DESCRIPTION: Reviewed By Assistant City Manager Dublin Pride Week is an annual event that engages individuals and groups in action -based activities to help improve the community and the environment. This year Dublin Pride week will start on Saturday, April 30 and will conclude on Saturday, May 7, 2016. The 2016 Dublin Pride Committee is seeking to build on the success of previous Dublin Pride Week events by engaging diverse community groups and individuals in the planning process. The Committee is made up of members representing the following groups: • City Council • City Staff • Dublin Unified School District • Amador Valley Industries • Dublin San Ramon Services District (DSRSD) • Zone 7 Water Agency • Dublin Lion's Club Page 1 of 4 ITEM NO. 4.2 • Senior Foundation • Dublin /San Ramon Women's Club • Community Volunteers The Dublin Pride logo and slogan, "Our City, Our Home ", recognizes Dublin's commitment to the global community and encourages people to work to improve our world through environmental awareness and volunteerism, as supported by the annual Dublin Pride Week activities. This year's theme is "Energize with Dublin Pride ". The attached brochure (Attachment 1) includes the winning poster from 2015 and provides information on events happening during Dublin Pride week. The proposed activities are as follows: Poster and Essay Contest: The poster and essay contests are a Dublin Pride Week tradition. The poster theme for this year is "Energize with Dublin Pride" and the essay theme is "What does Energy Conservation Mean to You?" The contests, which are being organized and managed by the Dublin San Ramon Women's Club, encourage entries centered around energy conservation, and are open to all Dublin students in grades Kindergarten through 12. Winning artwork and essays will be displayed at the Civic Center, and awards will be handed out at a future Dublin City Council Meeting. Food Drive: This year the Food Drive will take place on Saturday, April 30, as part of Volunteer Day. Collection bins will be set up at both Safeway stores in Dublin from 9 am — 4 pm. In addition, there will be collection bins located at the entrance gate and the exchange building at Camp Parks during the week of Dublin Pride. Collection bins will also be set up at Emerald Glen Park with a request for volunteers to bring a canned food item to donate on Volunteer Day. All food collected will be donated to the Dublin Children's Emergency Food Bank, which serves the Tri- Valley area. Household Hazardous Waste Collection: Dublin residents will be allowed to drop off household hazardous waste (HHW) free of charge and also pick up free compost for their personal use. Residents must make a reservation to drop off HHW and /or pick up free compost. The event will be held at Micro Dental Laboratories, Inc., located at 5601 Arnold Drive (corner of Arnold and Central Parkway) on Saturday, May 7, 2016. An announcement with reservation information will be mailed to Dublin residents informing them of the event place and time. The Dublin Pride Week brochure and City website are also promoting the HHW event. "Be a Sustainable Citizen" Workshop: This workshop will focus on ways of reducing our consumption of energy, water, and other resources. The discussion will be centered on the principles of "Sustainable in 10 ", which describe 10 cost -free methods to create cost savings and reduce our environmental footprint. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm. Registration is recommended. Volunteer Day Projects: Volunteer Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2016 beginning at 8:00 am. Alameda County District Supervisor Scott Haggerty's office is hosting breakfast this year. The Senior Foundation will serve breakfast and lunch. The event will conclude with a free barbeque provided by the Page 2 of 4 Dublin Lion's Club, starting at 11:30 am at Emerald Glen Park. Volunteer Day projects include the following: Senior Assistance Projects Volunteers will help elderly citizens take care of home - maintenance projects such as painting, cleaning, yard work and washing windows. School Improvement Projects Volunteers will choose from designated school beautification projects. Activities may include painting, repairs, cleaning, etc. Work is currently scheduled for Murray, Kolb, Frederiksen, Dougherty and Green Elementary Schools, Fallon and Wells Middle Schools, and Dublin High School. Non - Profit Assistance Projects Volunteers will be helping non - profit organizations with maintenance projects such as painting, cleaning, yard work, washing windows, etc. City Parks and Facility Projects Volunteers will assist with various maintenance projects such as cleaning, landscaping work, spreading mulch, etc., at the following parks and open spaces: Heritage Park and Cemetery, City Hall, Dublin Library, Dougherty Hills Dog Park, Fallon Park, Dublin Sports Ground, Emerald Glen Park and the Iron Horse Trail. City Creek Cleanup Projects Volunteers will help clean up some of the City's creeks and waterways. Volunteer Day Event Parking: The Emerald Glen Park parking lot off Gleason Drive will be available for volunteer parking. In addition, "No Parking" signs along the south side of Gleason Drive will be covered to provide additional parking spaces for the event. Staff has also reserved the Alameda County maintenance yard parking lot, which is just west of Emerald Glen Park on Gleason Drive, as an overflow parking area. Public Outreach: The success of Dublin Pride Week is largely dependent on the public outreach campaign developed to increase the community's awareness and participation in the activities and volunteer opportunities. This year's public outreach efforts include: • Website - http: / /www.dublin.ca.gov /210 /Dublin- Pride -Week. The website was developed for participants to obtain up -to -date information on the various activities and volunteer opportunities surrounding Dublin Pride Week. The website also includes a place for volunteers to sign up to participate in some of the events. The website is highlighted on all media and outreach materials. • Promotional posters — Posters displaying last year's Poster Contest winner will be distributed to City facilities and schools. • Press releases - Press releases are sent to area media representatives. • Brochures- Dublin Pride Week brochures are distributed to community- and faith -based organizations in the City and placed at strategic locations throughout the City.
