Quarterly Activity Report RECOMMENDATION Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT None DESCRIPTION Summer of 1986 marked the start of the Recreation Departments third year of operation. The . Summer quarter of offerings continued to be popular with the community. There were a total of "79" programs offered this Summer with "712" persons enrolled. The overall success rate for the Summer quarter was 75%, which is up from 65% for Summer of 1985 . Exhibit A contains an analysis of the classes offered while Exhibit B offers a comparison between the previous quarter as well as the same quarter last. year. The Summer activities of the Recreation Department are summarized below. FACILITY UTILIZATION Utilization of Shannon Center remains fairly constant with past quarters . The social hall was utilized most heavily being occupied 55% of the available hours. Overall the Center was in use 220 of the time. Major categories for use are private rentals and department sponsored programs. LEISURE ENRICHMENT CLASSES Summer has traditionally been a slow time for enrollment in Leisure Enrichment Classes, but this Summer we actually experienced an increase in enrollment. . Of the "61" classes offered, "54" were conducted which is an 89% success rate. Bowling, Tennis, Modeling and Karate proved to be popular with children. Golf, Massage, Tennis, Dog Obedience and Country Western Dance were adult favorites. PUBLIC SERVICE PROGRAMS There was only one Public Service Program this Summer, Car Care. Taught by a representative from the California State Auto Association, this class provides participants with information on preventative maintenance for their automobiles. SPECIAL EVENTS The First Annual Valley Car Showcase and Swap Meet was this Summer ' s special event. The event was co-sponsored with the Recreation Departments of Livermore, Pleasanton and San Ramon and was held at Beckman Industries in Bishop Ranch Business Park. Ninety-seven ( 97 ) car enthusiasts participated in this event with prizes awarded in a variety of categories. Local car clubs provided staffing for the event as well as distributed publicity. ----------------------------------------------------------------- ITEM NO. AGENDA STATEMENT - Summer Quarter Recreation Report Page Two SPORTS CAMPS Soccer, Track and Basketball Camps were offered for children this Summer. Six ( 6 ) sessions of camp were scheduled, but all had to be cancelled due to lack of enrollment. SUMMER PLAYGROUND PROGRAM Playground Programs were offered at two sites this Summer, Murray and Nielsen Schools . The playgrounds met daily from 12-4pm for eight weeks . A variety of activities ranging from crafts to field trips were planned to entertain the children. The attendance at the two sites averaged "37" per day. TENDERFOOT DAY CAMP Tenderfoot Day Camp is for preschool age children and is held at Shannon Park. Four two-week sessions were offered and conducted. Each session culminated with a family potluck dinner in which the children ' s art work was displayed and songs performed. Fifty-two ( 52 ) children participated in this Summer' s program. TRIPS AND TOURS Trips were planned to the Giants and A' s baseball games, the Impressionist Art Exhibit at the de Young Museum, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and the San Francisco Fashion Outlets . The trip to the de Young Museum for the Impressionist Art Exhibit was extremely successful with "40" people attending and a waiting list. The Baseball Games, the Fashion Outlets and the Boardwalk were co-sponsored . with the Recreation Departments of Livermore, Pleasanton and San Ramon with limited participation by Dublin residents .
