Quarterly Analysis B. Registration Comparison QC. Quarterly Activity Report RECOMMENDATION Receive Information FINANCIAL STATEMENT None DESCRIPTION The City ' s Recreation Department offers classes and programs on a quarterly basis. The Spring Quarter of 1988 encompassed April, May and the first two weeks of June. A variety of classes and special events were offered which are summarized in the following paragraphs. The outstanding rate for children ' s classes continued in the Spring Quarter. Of the "26" classes offered for children, "21 " met for a success rate of 81 % . While this is down slightly (86% ) from Spring 1987 , 81 % is the same success rate as Winter 1988 . Classes for preschool age children continue to be extremely popular. "Time for Two ' s and "Just You and Me" are two of the first classes to fill . The Preschool Program was also filled to capacity during Session III (March-June) . Sixty children were enrolled in three different classes . The parent participation concept allows us to offer a quality program at a very reasonable rate and the program continues to grow in popularity. Once again, the Teen/Adult classes fared poorly. Only 52% of the classes that were offered were conducted. Fifty-two percent is a slight decrease from Winter 1988 in which 57% of the classes met. This is a major drop from Spring 1987 when 81 % of the Teen/Adult classes were conducted. It is very likely that over-programming contributed to the poor success rate, especially in the arts and crafts category where so many classes were cancelled. Although the overall success rate for the Teen/Adult classes is low, the enrollment is very good in those classes that do meet. The "Country Western Dance" classes continue to fill to overflowing. "Basic Financial Planning" had a good turn-out and almost all the "Golf" classes reached the maximum enrollment. The overall success rate was 63% for the Spring Quarter. Again this is down slightly ( 68% ) from the previous quarter and a dramatic decrease ( 83% ) from Spring 1987 . Staff will utilize this information to select more appealing programs to offer the public. For the first time since 1985 , we had beautiful weather for our St. Patrick ' s Day Celebration. Approximately "800" people of all ages attended the festivities at Shannon Center. There was a variety of entertainment, food and games available. There was even a leprechaun giving away balloons to the children! The Annual Easter Egg Hunt was held at the Dublin Sports Grounds on April 2 . Approximately "390" children, ages 2 to 12 participated in the hunt. Children were divided by age groups and then given the opportunity to find candy, novelty items and special prize eggs . The Second Annual Flea Market was held at Shannon Center on June 4 . The turn-out was down slightly from 1987 probably due to questionable weather, however there were still approximately "400" people (buyers and sellers) in attendance. This event provides an extremely reasonable way for someone to hold a garage sale and makes it easy on shoppers too! ---------- ------------------------------------------------------ ITEM NO. AGENDA STATEMENT - Spring 1988 Quarterly Report August 9, 1988 Page Two On April 15 , a Teen Concert was held at the Shannon Center featuring BHT, Electric Funeral, Unit Pride and Tyrranicide. There were "221 " teens present for a very successful event. There was only one minor incident when slam dancing began, but was immediately stopped when a band member from another band asked the audience to stop slam dancing and ceased the music temporarily. The Afterschool Playground Program maintained a steady attendance rate at Murray and Nielsen. Both playgrounds participated in the St. Patrick ' s Day Parade along with the actual celebration at Shannon Center. The Recreation Leaders conducted various game booths for children and sold green cotton candy. Staff planned a barbecue at Mape Park in May for both Nielsen and Murray sites . Both playgrounds enjoyed an afternoon .of games, a treasure hunt, singing and a barbecue with the help of a few parent volunteers. Staff experienced several difficulties in maintaining consistent staffing at the playgrounds. For a time, we were short-staffed and had to do some adjusting from other sources.
