The Mayor C/o Town hall, Dublin California 94568 , U.S.A. Dear Sir/Madam, No doubt you are well aware of Dublin' s Millennium celebrations which are taking place during 1988. We are having a wonderful year with many events taking place all over the city. These have ranged from the establishment of new parks and items of sculpture to festival activities. One project which we consider of great merit is the establishment of an Arboretum which we claim will last at least until the next Millennium. The Arboretum is to consist of 1,000 different trees from all over the world. As you know Ireland' s climate is quite moderate and we are lucky in being able to grow a wide range of trees. The Arboretum will be located on a 10 acre site in St. Annes Park and the layout will emphasise principally the geographic origin of each tree. Therefore the trees will be planted in continental sections where for instances we will have an Asian section, North American section, Australian section, etc. We also intend to plant trees to high-light their landscape value which means we will group trees which are suitable for small gardens or spring flowers or ornamental bark, etc.`' The Arboretum will be a resource for everybody. While Botanist and arboriculturists will have particular interest, .it will also be a facility for school children. The project is being sponsored by the Tree Council of Ireland which is a representative organisation comprising over 25 other groups . The Arboretum therefore is the gift of the Tree Council to Dublin for its Millennium. However the Tree Council is a voluntary organisation with limited resources and we undertake projects on the basis of sponsorship. President: Dr. C. Boylan,Vice President: Mr.J. McCullen,Secretary: Mr. P.Suttle,Ticasurer: Mr. L. Leech,Public Relations Officer: Mr. D. Deasy A Company limited by guarantee. Registered No. 111380. Registered Office: Fourth floor,St. Martin's House,Waterloo Rd.,Dublin 4. In the case of the Millennium Arboretum, we could have sought corporate sponsorship but decided to involve as many people as possible through individual sponsorship of trees . As you know many people have a great interest in trees , and trees are planted to commemorate family events . Therefore we offer sponsorship at £25 per tree and I have enclosed some leaflets outlining all the details. Being conscious that your city is also called Dublin, we thought it important that you be made aware of this scheme and of course we would be delighted if you can support our efforts. Needless to say we can supply more leaflets if required. Yours Sincerely, DR. C. BOYLAN, PRESIDENT. Ab •' " c •j. •'``?_.
