DESCRIPTION The following report . summarizes the -
programs and activities sponsored by the Citys Recreation
Department during the summer quarter, June through August, 1988 .
Aquatics
On January 1 , 1988 the City of Dublin assumed the aquatic
programming responsibility at the Valley Community Swim Center
from the Dublin San Ramon Services District. The pool operated
from March 21 through September 11 , 1988.
The aquatics program was under the supervision of the Recreation
Director. An Aquatics Coordinator was hired in late March to
plan and organize the aquatics program as well as hire and train
seasonal aquatics staff. In addition to the Aquatics
Coordinator, there were 15 other seasonal employees who served as
cashiers , lifeguards, swim instructors or pool managers.
During the spring and summer season, the pool was open a total of
"105" days for recreational swimming.
Total combined attendance for recreational swim and lap swim was
13 , 573 . Pre-season attendance (May 21 -June 19 ) was 1 ,345; Summer
season attendance (June 20-September 5 ) was 11 ,986 ; and post-
season attendance (September 5-25 ) was 242 . A brief summary of
attendance follows:
Month Days Open Total Average/Day
May 4 411 103
June 16 3157 197
July 31 5477 177
August 31 3657 118
September 21 871 42
TOTAL 103 13,573 132
A variety of instructional programs were offered at the Dublin
Swim Center including youth swim lessons , swim team, adult swim
classes and handicapped swim lessons. Instructional programs
were scheduled during the week in both the morning and early
evening, and also on Saturday mornings. There were approximately
"1 , 069" participants in instructional programs during the season.
In summary , staff feels that the summer aquatics season was
successful. Obviously there are areas for change and/or
improvement, but this past season will provide us with a strong
foundation on which to build upon.
Leisure Enrichment Classes
Based on the statistics compiled from the Quarterly Registration
Analysis (attached in Exhibit A) , the summer programs were very
successful. The number of participants increased in both the
youth and teen/adult programs . There were "1 ,361 " people of all
ages enrolled in the "53" classes that were conducted by the
department during the summer quarter.

Page Two
The success rate for the children ' s classes was slightly lower
( 80% ) than the 81 % rate for the spring quarter. However, the
rate of 80% was a dramatic improvement from 60% one year ago.
Tenderfoot Day Camp and Rookie Soccer both had a big increase in
participation. Bumper Bowl was another extremely popular class.
The teen/adult programs shot up from a 52% success rate in the
spring quarter to 75% . Hopefully the increase indicates that the
teen/adult programs are finally on track. Country Western Dance
and Golf classes continue to bring in large crowds. The Tennis
and Calligraphy classes were quite popular during the summer
quarter.
Playgrounds
Children ages 6-12 also had the opportunity to participate in the
Summer Playground Program conducted at Arroyo Vista, Murray,
Nielsen and Wells schools. Summer playgrounds run for eight
consecutive weeks from June 20 to August 12. The program operates
from 12-4pm, Monday through .Friday. There were a total of "294"
children enrolled at the four sites . The program fee of $5. 00
for the eight-week program included a T-shirt which was a very
popular addition.
The children participated in games , arts and crafts , field trips ,
swim days , and special events. Our department joined forces with
San Ramon to host a carnival day and a playground olympics.
The playground program continues, to gain in popularity and
provides a welcome diversion for youths 6-12 during the summer
months.
Senior Citizens
On June 20 , 1988 the Dublin Senior Center opened its doors to the
public for the first time. Since then the Center has been open
Monday through Friday from 9 :OOam-3 :OOpm. The Center is staffed
by one Recreation Coordinator and a host of volunteers. In the
five months that the Center has been open, a variety of programs
have been introduced which are gaining in popularity on a weekly
basis .
Classes at the Dublin Senior Center are offered through the
Chabot College Quest Program or taught by volunteer or paid
instructors . The majority of the classes held at the Senior
Center are free of charge. During the first five months of the
operation, seven classes were offered. Walk'N Talk and exercise
classes are offered twice per week at the Senior Center.
Both activities are free of charge and available on a drop-in
basis . Bridge, bingo, pinochle and scrabble are all enjoyed at
the Dublin Senior Center. Bridge is extremely popular with an
average of six tables per week. Bingo is also well received
especially as brunch is served prior to bingo.
Home cooked meals are offered three days per week at the Center.
Lunch is served for $1 . 75 on Tuesday and Thursday and brunch for
$1 .00 is served on Friday. Average lunch attendance is "33" per
week while brunch averages "16" per week. Menus and meals are
prepared by the Recreation Coordinator with the assistance of
volunteers .
Health services are offered for seniors on a varying schedule.
Currently Hicap offers medicare counseling on a monthly basis and
the Valley Community Health Center offers quarterly medical
screening. Vision screening was offered in September.
Additional programs at the Center include weekly movies and
nature films , monthly crime prevention presentations from the
Dublin Police Department and weekly recreational dance.
As stated earlier, volunteers are heavily util--ed at the Center.
Currently we have volunteer receptionists four days per week,
volunteer cooks , volunteer instructors and miscellaneous
volunteers doing a variety of tasks for the Center. In the first
24 weeks of the Center we had a total of "585" volunteer hours.
Exhibit C is a compilation of attendance statistics for the
Senior Center.
Special Events
The Recreation Department also co-sponsored the Third
Annual Valley Car Showcase in San Ramon on July 23 .
Seventy-eight people were registered for this event. The level
of participation in this event has continued to drop from year to
year. The sponsoring agencies have agreed to host the event once
more before making a decision on whether or not to continue the
activity.
In addition to those activities planned and coordinated by our
staff , the department hosted the childrens game area at the
Shamrock Potato Festival . The games were extremely popular with
the children in attendance at this second annual event.
Youth Employment Program
The Summer Youth Employment Program entered it ' s third year of
operation in Dublin. This year the program experienced a late
start and an early finish due to staffing constraints.
The program began May 31 and ran through August 26 . The office
was located on the Dublin High School campus which favored easy
access to Dublin teens. There were a total of "125" youth
registered in the program and "64" of the "99" job orders were
filled.
The program was offered in cooperation with Alameda County
Training and Employment Board who provided technical support in
the way of publicity.
Staff is pleased with the over all success of the programs that
were offered to the community. Staff invites comments from the
Council and public regarding the summer classes and activities .
