Registration Analysis B. Registration Comparison RECOMMENDATION Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT None DESCRIPTION The following report summarizes the programs and activities sponsored by the City's Recreation Department during the Fall Quarter, September through December, 1988 . Afterschool Playground Program For the fourth year in a row, the Department has offered their Afterschool Playground Program for 1 -5 grade children. The program is held at Murray and Nielsen Elementary schools. Currently , there are "130" children enrolled at the Nielsen School site and "63" children at the Murray site. We initiated a one-time fee of $10 .00 per child to help offset administrative costs . In comparing this years enrollment with last years to date , the' fee initiation has not appeared to have any impact on the registration received. The program is staffed by five Recreation Leaders , three at the Nielsen site and two at the Murray site. Average daily attendance at Nielsen is "45-50" children; and "25-30" at the Murray site. In addition to the daily scheduled games , crafts and supervised free play, both sites have offered a number of special events including a Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas Celebration, an on-site newspaper, barbecues at nearby park sites , and an on-site restaurant. The program is well supported by parents and school officials , and enjoyed by program participants and staff alike. Leisure Enrichment Classes Five-hundred and sixty two people participated in Dublin Recreation programs during the Fall Quarter. Of the "58" programs offered, forty-six classes actually met, resulting in an 81 % success rate . This is one of the best overall success rates ever for our department. In the children ' s classes , the programs for preschoolers continue to be popular. A third session was opened to accommodate the number of participants in "Time for Two ' s", "Tap & Ballet" and Sing-Along Time" . "Bumper Bowl" and "Karate" were the big hits for school age children, and "Babysitter" and "Tap & Ballet" were also popular this quarter . We are starting to develop a _core of programs that consistently draw well . In adult classes , "Wardrobing with Ease" and "Fashion , Accessory - - and .Make-up" were newcomers .that__.drew a.. considerable. amount . of interest . The craft classes fared much better than they have for some time. "Calligraphy" and "Victorian Wreath" being the most popular. "Golf" and "Country Western Dance" never fail to get a good response. ----------------------------------------------------------------- ITEM NO. AGENDA STATEMENTS - 1988 Fall Recreation Report February 27 , 1989 Page Two Preschool Program The Shannon Center preschool started it ' s third year of operation this past Fall . Three separate classes. were offered as follows: Ages 4-5yrs Mon-Wed-Fri 9-11 :30am Ages 2yrs/9mos-3yrs Tues-Thurs 9-11 :30am Ages 3-5yrs Mon-Tues-Thurs 12 :45-3 :15pm All three classes were very popular with "56" children enrolled in a program that could accommodate "60" . This parent participation preschool seems to appeal to those parents who enjoy sharing the preschool experience with their children. Special Events The Recreation Department conducted four special events during the Fall Quarter. The "Halloween Spooktacular" was held on October 28 at Shannon Center. Approximately "360" children participated in this free event . There were games and crafts for all ages. In November, our department co-sponsored the Basketball Hoop- ' D-Do at Dublin High School . This basketball skills activity consisted of a timed dribble, a shoot-around and a free throw shooting contest. Boys and girls , ages 9-18 were invited to participate. , It was co-sponsored by Livermore Area Recreation and Park District and the City of San Ramon. December was a very busy month. The "Annual Holiday Happening" (Tree Ceremony ) was held at Shannon Center on December 5 . Approximately "250" people were entertained by the John Knox Preschool Chorus , the St. Raymond' s Bell Choir and the Dublin High School Band. The evening concluded with a visit from Santa and refreshments provided by the Tri-Valley Lioness . The "Fourth Annual Breakfast with Santa" was held at Shannon Center on December 10 . The Dublin High Band Boosters served pancake breakfast to "370" participants. There was plenty of time to visit and take photos with Santa after breakfast. This event continues to grow year after year. New Programs During the school Christmas vacation, a special holiday program "Winter Wonderland" was held for the first time at the Shannon Center. It was open for K-5 grade children and featured holiday games , crafts and special events . The program was offered on Monday, December 19 through Thursday, December 22 from 12 : 00- 4 : 00p.m. , and cost $3 . 00 per child per day or $10 .00 per child for all four days . There was space available for "40" children per day and each day was sold out with a waiting list. The program was well received by all who participated and we anticipate offering a similar program next holiday season.
