DESCRIPTION The City' s Recreation Department offers
classes and programs on a quarterly basis . The Department
recently completed the Spring quarter which emcompassed the
months of April, May and two weeks of June. In comparing the
Spring of 1987 with previous Spring quarters, we found that it
was the most successful Spring quarter to date.
Attached in Exhibits A, B and C are statistics on the classes and
programs offered. Below is a brief summary of the program
offerings .
Afterschool Recreation Program
The Afterschool Recreation Program continued to maintain steady
participation of 40 to 50 per day at each site, Murray and
Nielson Schools . The program ended on June 12, 1987 . The year
culminated with a field trip to the waterslides at Shadow Cliffs
Regional Park and an end of the year party at each site .
Of the three years that the Afterschool Recreation Program has
been offered, staff feels that this past year was the most
successful . Enrollment was up from previous years and remained
constant throughout the school year. Staff has developed a good
working relationship with the school staff which contributes to
the success of the program.
Co-Sponsored Programs
The Recreation Department offers a number of programs in
cooperation with the neighboring departments of Livermore,
Pleasanton and San Ramon. During the Spring quarter, three trips
were offered cooperatively as well as the Valley-Wide Flea Market
and Garage Sale.
A new event this Spring was the May Day Prom Night for
developmentally disabled teens held at Howard Johnsons in Dublin.
This highly successful event attracted approximately 1140"
participants . Each participant was provided with a complimentary
corsage or boutonniere and a commemorative picture.
Facility Utilization
Overall utilization of Shannon Center remained fairly constant
with previous quarters being utilized 24% of the available hours .
However, utilization of the Social Hall was at it ' s lowest since
Winter of 1985 . The Social Hall was only rented "9" times over
"9 weeks" which is considerably lower than previous Spring
quarters . Staff is considering various methods to market the
Center in order to increase utilization.

Leisure Enrichment Classes
The Recreation Department offered a total of "53" classes during
the Spring quarter. Twenty-one ( 21) of these classes were
specifically for children, the remaining "32" were geared to
teens and adults . Eighty-six percent (86%) of the children's
classes were conducted while 81% of the teen/adult classes were
held. Overall the department had an 83% success rate for the
Spring quarter in 1987 .
Preschool Program
The Preschool Program concluded it ' s second successful year of
operation. The program was expanded to three classes in
September. It operated at capacity the entire year. Staff plans
to again offer three classes, three times per year for FY1987-88.
If the program continues in popularity and exceeds capacity,
additional classes will be considered.
Special Events
There were two special .events during the Spring quarter - the
Easter Egg Hunt on April 18, and the Swap Meet on May 30 . The
Egg Hunt drew "350" children to the Dublin Sports Grounds .
Thirty-seven (37 ) sellers and approximately "400" shoppers
participated in the Swap Meet at Shannon Park.
Both events were new to the Department this year and staff felt
that they were both extremely successful .
Teen Program
During the Spring quarter, two activities were offered for teens .
A Ski Trip for Junior High School age was conducted in March.
This trip was co-sponsored with Livermore, Pleasanton and San
Ramon. Although "71" teens went on the trip, only five were
from Dublin .
The second teen activity was a teen concert at Shannon Center in
May. The concert featured four bands and drew approximately
"240" teens . Due to the success of the concert, staff plans to
pursue this avenue of entertainment for teens .
