SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE F S fr
MEETING DATE: December 13, 2007
SUBJECT: Learn Information for Empowerment (L.I.F.E.) Event
Report Prepared by Anna Hudson, Recreation Coordinator
ATTACHMENTS: None
RECOMMENDATION: Receive report and provide input.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: Staff is planning the second annual Learn Information for
Empowerment - L.I.F.E. - Event. The goal of this Saturday event is to promote the benefits of the
activities offered at the Dublin Senior Center. Staff proposes incorporating the new Dublin Senior Center
vision statement as one of the main guiding principles, which is "Creating intriguing activities, rewarding
friendships and a lifestyle of possibilities. "
The new theme selected will be Mind Quest. Staff plans to utilize entertainment, games and other creative
means to engage the senses. Studies show that when you involve all your senses you can enhance your
memory. The Institute of Aging states that "research indicates the human brain generates new brain cells
and that environmental input such as aerobic exercise changes the structure and function of the brain.
These findings and the work of others have underscored the importance of brain health. A proactive and
lifelong lifestyle for brain health relates to development of brain reserves that may delay the onset of
neurodegenerative disease."
MAIN COMPONENTS
This year the event will take on a new L.I.F.E. Staff will offer a variety of fun activities to incorporate
one or more of the six important reasons why the Dublin Senior C.E.N.T.E.R. is the warm and friendly
place to be. C.E.N.T.E.R. stands for create, educate, nurture, transform, entertain and or recreate to
influence positive mindset. The main method to engage our senses will be activated through
entertainment, fun play and nutrition.
The "Mind Quest" event will consist of four main components:
First, a variety of free mini-workshops will be scheduled in one or two rooms every 30 minutes from 9:00
a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Guest speakers may provide information about cartooning, writing, poetry, or provide
instruction on how to play a variety of games like chess, Sudoko, etc.
Secondly, free entertainment, such as a musician, singer, or stand up comedian, may perform during the
event.

ITEM NO.: 7.1
The third component will be game competition to be scheduled during the weekday or on the Wednesday
night prior to the event. Semi-finals and final competition could take place on Saturday afternoon. Fun
play and other games can be offered on Saturday morning to include but not limited to Sudoko, Scrabble,
Chess, Wii, indoor bocce, etc.
Food service is the third component in which we can either plan to provide nutritional snacks and/or
provide a special luncheon with entertainment for the price of a regular special event.
Instead of the Senior Information and Resources Fair component,we will seek a sponsor(TBD)to
underwrite the event.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The event will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Dublin Senior Center from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00
p.m. The Special Luncheon and entertainment will begin at 11:40 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All other activity and
game competition will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event is free to the public. However, the
luncheon will require registration and payment by Monday,May 12,'2008.
Attendees will receive a free gift. Possible gifts include post-it notes or white erase boards with the Senior
Center vision statement, L.I.F.E. logo and phone number inscribed at the top.
Staff has determined there should not be any conflicts with other senior centers. San Ramon Senior Center
has moved their May event from the 3rd to the 5th Saturday. Pleasanton and Livermore have not scheduled
a May event at this time.
MARKETING AND ADVERTISING
The LIFE logo will be used to help promote the 2008 event. In addition to the regular publicity, press
releases will be sent to online website, and the newsletter will be available on the City website. Using
property tax data and customer information from the City's recreation database, Staff will create a
targeted mailing list to send the event flyers and or postcards to Dublin senior residents. A brief notice
about the event can also be placed in City's water bills for all the billing cycles.
OUTCOMES AND EVALUATION
The expected outcomes will be "to create rewarding friendships, intriguing activities and a lifestyle of
possibilities for seniors in the community." Evaluation forms will be distributed to garner feedback on
the overall event. One of the questions that will be asked is to list what new activities or information did
they learn from participating in the LIFE event. As an incentive, those responding to the survey will be
entered into a drawing for"Fun Related"door prizes.
VOLUNTEER NEEDS
In order to have a successful event, Staff will recruit volunteers to help plan and implement the event.
Each Dublin Senior Center Advisory Committee Member will be given the opportunity to co-chair one of -
three components. Several volunteers will be recruited to help on the day of event.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the Committee receive the report and provide input.
