FINANCIAL STATEMENT: The adoption of this Ordinance would result
in an increase of $20.10 per month for each
Councilmember subsequent to the November,
1992 election.
DESCRIPTION: The California Government Code provides that a
City Council may enact an Ordinance which provides for a salary
increase in an amount equal to 5% for each calendar year. No
Councilmember shall be eligible to receive the increase, however,
until one or more Councilmembers begin a new term of office. This
will occur following the November, 1992 election.
Councilmembers currently earn $382 .88 per month. The City Council
adopted Ordinance No. 6-91 in May of 1991 which provides for a 5%
increase ($19. 14 per month) for calendar year 1991. If this Ordinance
is adopted, Councilmember salaries would be increased an additional 5%
($20. 10 per month) for calendar year 1992, thus bringing Council-
members' salaries to $422 . 12 per month following the November
election.
In addition, the Council may determine whether the Mayor should be
compensated in addition to what he/she receives as a Councilmember.
Staff recommends that the City Council conduct a public hearing and
consider the option to increase Councilmember salaries by 5% for
calendar year 1992 and also determine whether the Mayor should receive
additional compensation.
If the Council wishes to proceed with the 5% Councilmember salary
increase, the Council should waive the reading and INTRODUCE the
Ordinance. If the Council wishes to compensate the Mayor in addition
to his/her compensation as a Councilmember, Staff should be directed
to prepare the appropriate Ordinance which would be brought back to a
future Council meeting.
