Foss, City Manager SUBJECT: Acceptance of Gifts from Bike Month Contributing Sponsors Prepared by Kathy Southern, Environmental Technician EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The City Council will consider the acceptance of gifts and contributions received from various local businesses and organizations for Bike to Work Day Energizer Stations and other Bike Month events and programs which took place during the month of May. FINANCIAL IMPACT: No direct impact. Only in-kind support was received from sponsors. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council recognize the sponsors and formally accept the contributions. Submitted By Reviewed By Public Works Director Assistant City Manager DESCRIPTION: There were several events and activities that occurred during the month of May 2016; encouraging people to use bicycling as an alternate mode of transportation. These events included: 1. Bike to Work Day (May 12) 2. Flat Tire Repair Clinic (May 14) 3. Community Bike Ride (May 15) 4. Women’s Bike Safety Workshop (May 21) 5. Bike Road Class ( May 22) 6. Bike to the Market Day (May 26) ITEM NO. 4.2 Page 1 of 2 The Cities of Dublin and Pleasanton co-hosted a Bike Month Drawing at the end of May to show support of National Bike Month. Entry in the Drawing was offered to participants in the City’s local bikeways events mentioned above. A total of 20 Tri-Valley businesses contributed to Bike Month events, six of which were Dublin businesses. There were 28 prizes donated to the Bike Month Drawing. Dublin Businesses contributed approximately $200 in prizes and at least 20 hours of volunteer time hosting both the Bike to Work Day BART stations and the Flat Tire Repair clinic. A list of Dublin businesses sponsoring Bike to Work Day and the National Bike Month Drawing is shown below. The West Dublin BART station was also hosted by REI. The East Dublin BART station hosts included Hacienda, Veeva and Dublin Cyclery. The City of Dublin recorded over 580 bicyclists for the morning commute, including 92 bicyclists (including skate boards and scooters) at the West Dublin/Pleasanton BART station. The bicyclists received free refreshments, T-shirts, entry in the Bike Month Drawing, and tote bags containing giveaways from regional and local contributing sponsors. Staff would like to offer special recognition to Dublin Cyclery and REI Dublin. Dublin Cyclery was a collaborating organizer and co-host of the East Dublin/Pleasanton BART Bike to Work Day Energizer Station. Dublin Cyclery also helped the City of Dublin co-host the Flat Tire Repair Clinic which offered free bike maintenance to passing bicyclists. REI Dublin was a collaborating organizer and co-host of the West Dublin/Pleasanton BART Bike to Work Day Energizer Station. Staff recommends that, per Government Code Section, 37354, the City Council formally accept the contributions and recognize the sponsors with certificates of appreciation for supporting Bike to Work Day and National Bike Month.
