CALL TO ORDER
The February 25, 2009 meeting of the Youth Advisory Committee was called to order at 7:04 PM at the
Dublin Civic Center Regional Meeting Room, by Vice Chairperson Arcuri.

ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
City of Dublin Poet Laureate.
Ronnie Holland, the City of Dublin's Poet Laureate, gave a brief description to the Advisory Committee
of her experience as a writer and poet. Ms. Holland would like to work with the Youth Advisory
Committee to develop more teen writing programs. The poet laureate webpage located on the City of
Dublin website will post teen writing events and community poetry events, such as the photography
exhibit in Livermore on March 7 where all of the past and present poet laureates from California will
attend and write a poem for each piece of artwork displayed. Ms. Holland is looking forward-to working
with the Youth Advisory Committee Members on planning poetry and creative writing events for teens.
40 Youth Developmental Assets Program
Committee Member Aslan Brown introduced Jennifer Rousch, a counselor at Foothill High School in
Pleasanton and Coordinator of the 40 Youth Developmental Assets Program. The program encourages
positive activities to protect youth from harmful or unhealthy choices. Committee Member Brown and
Ms. Rousch gave a presentation on the 40 assets that are most important to positive youth development.
Ms. Rousch emphasized the importance of focusing on building strengths to raise youth and adults united
for a healthy community. Some positive activities that encourage asset building are improving
relationships between children and parents, community service, and school programs promoting
confidence. Ms. Rousch offered to provide aid in building a 40 Youth Developmental Assets Program in
Dublin and provided the Committee with additional informational material to share with Dublin youth.
Public Comment
Vicky Shay, Chairperson of the City of San Ramon Teen Council gave a brief introduction of the purpose
• of their Teen Council. Ms. Shay said their Teen Council plans several events such as Poker Night and
Senior Help Night, where they assist senior citizens on how to text, use,a computer and how to operate
various other electronical instruments. Ms. Shay expressed interest in planning an inter-city event with the
Dublin Youth Advisory Committee. Staff Member Gamez will make contact with Adam Chow, City of
San Ramon Teen Coordinator to discuss a possible collaborative teen event.
MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING-February 25, 2009

THE COMMITTEE VOTED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 25,2009.

NEW BUSINESS
Subcommittee Reports
Chairperson Minor, member of the St. Patrick's Booth Subcomniittee, announced that the booth will have
Guitar Hero World Tour available for participants to play for a donation. Committee Member Rogers
suggested there should be a bean bag toss for a younger crowd. Volunteers are needed to hand out stickers
and prizes. The St. Patrick's Day Festival is on March 14 and 15 and all Committee Members are needed
to volunteer to make this booth successful.
The Website Subcommittee meeting will be rescheduled.
The Bearing is Caring Subcommittee leader Edlund, reported that 550 green bracelets with "Bearing is
Caring" and "YAC 09" written on both sides of the bracelets have been ordered and should be available
by the St. Patrick's Festival. Committee Member Edlund emphasized the importance of all Committee
Members selling bracelets through various outlets, such as family members, Dublin High School Video
Bulletin, school classrooms, and at the St. Patrick's Day Festival.
The Video Game Tournament Subcommittee leader is Committee Member Brown. The Subcommittee is
planning to use the Gamer Express RV which includes 12 consoles for the price of$315. The video game
tournament will be incorporated into the Dubtown Jam in May. This is a free teen event that offers sports
games, free food, and jumpers in addition to the video game tournament.
OTHER BUSINESS
Staff Member Gamez reminded the Committee Members that the new Shannon Community Center will
have a grand opening on.February 28 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Shannon Community Center is an.
environmentally-friendly building. It was built with recycled materials with many windows allowing
sunlight into the building decreasing the use of electrical lighting. The Grand Opening will feature local
businesses such as caterers and class instructors that offer programs through the City. There will be tours
around the new Community Center to promote summer programs, events, and the new preschool that will
open in the fall 2009.
Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison Representative Van Loon asked the Youth Advisory
Committee Members how to increase youth participation in City events. Currently, there is a decrease in
participation for teen events. Vice Chairperson Arcuri suggested that times and dates of teen events
should be changed to cater to teen schedules, considering teens have afterschool sports and work.
