AGENDA STATEMENT ��`% � YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITEE � rl,°il MEETING DATE:JANUARY 27,2010 SUBJECT: Fall 2009 Teen Quarterly Report Report Prepared by, Frank Luna, Recreation Supervisor ATTACHMENTS: None RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Parks and Community Services Department provides activities to teens in the community that enhance their social, intellectual, physical and emotional development. During the fall 2009 quarter, the Department offered Teen Events, Student Union and, the Teen Website programs. Following is a summary of the Teen Events, Student Union and Teen Website programs. -Teen Events The City implements a variety of teen events to offer teens in the community a specific activity just for their age group. Four events were offered including Capture the Cauldron, Teen Skate Competition at the Day on the Glen Festival,Dive-In Movie and Middle School Dance. These events gave the opportunity for youth to engage in a positive and safe environment while enjoying the company of friends. Following is a summary of participation in Teen Events. The Dive-In event was marketed at the middle schools and high school with flyers and posters available at the each school's orientation day. The event was broadcasted at each schools daily announcement. Information was also included in the fall activity guide and available on the city and teen website. The skate board competition was marketed with flyers and posters at all Dublin elementary schools, middle schools and high school. The event was advertised at local skate board businesses and posters were posted at the San Ramon, Pleasanton and Dublin skate parks. Student Unions Student Union is an after school recreation program designed specifically for middle school students. An emphasis is placed on academic enrichment and recreation/leisure enrichment. Student Union programs are held in two eighteen-week sessions at Wells Middle School and Fallon School. The program offers a variety of fun activities for teens, including educational programs, sporting events, arts and crafts, science projects and music events. The program also features the popular homework club, and two exciting excursion throughout the school year. The program will be held on Monday from 2:00 p.m to 5:30 p.m and Tuesday through Friday from 3:00 p.m to - 5:30 p.m. Students participate in Homework Club each day of the week. Activities may include poetry, improve karaoke, sports such as whiffle ball, dodgeball, basketball, science projects, special guest speakers and table games..All activities are subject to change - The following table summarizes program registration. The number of visitors the website had during the months of September 2009 through November 2009 was 3,833. The number of hits was 35,484. The number of hits is calculated by every time the user clicks their mouse when using the website. The pages requested is the -popularity of the pages visited on the site. 6,429 pages were visited on the site during this time period. The most popular page visited during this period was the resources page which includes a list of various teen social service organizations such as Axis Community Health, Tough Love, Planned Parenthood, Suicide Hotline and many more self-help organizations. The second popular page was the jobs page followed by the games page. Staffhas promoted the teen website at different locations throughout the community that teens frequently visit. The locations included Dublin High School, Wells and Fallon middle schools, and the Dublin Library. Also, Staff promotes the website at teen special events such as Capture the Creature, middle school dance, and Youth Music Showcase. Staff has promoted the website at Dublin High during lunchtime hours. Staff continues to work collaboratively with the Dublin High Journalism class which produces the school newspaper "The Dublin Shield". The Dublin Shield is included on the website, and is updated frequently. • RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Youth Advisory Committee receive the report. • • • • • • 3 of .
